So I'm pretty excited about this. I went to Bridal Beginning in Mt. Lebanon with my mom, aunt, stepmom, and grandma last Saturday. I wasn't planning on finding "the" dress, I moreso went to try on a specific dress (which they didn't have). Anyway, I got paired with Cheryl who was really fantastic. She brought me almost exactly what I was looking for and was very respectful of my price range. The last two dresses were fantastic and one of them is going to be "the one", but I want my uncle to see them since he has offered to pay for the dress.

Dress 1 (<-clicky!) is by Anjolique and has this fabulous internal corset thing that does wonders. It comes with a little skinny beaded belt, but I will switch it out with something a little more blingy if I go with this dress.

Dress 2 (<-clicky!) is by Mon Cheri and has a little more beading to it. I would have the straps removed, but it definitely doesn't need any additional bling-age.

I'm leaning towards dress 1, but we'll see what happens. I would be incredibly happy with either. I still don't have pictures of me actually in them, but as soon as I do, I will post those too!

I had lots of checks this weekend!!

Friday we had our tasting! We decided on chicken piccata, prime rib and a pasta tuscany for vegeterians. We also picked our hors deveours... spaniokapita (sp?), stuffed mushrooms, ham and cheese croqueta and a spanish tortilla. The last two we provided recipes and the chef nailed them! We'll also have cheese and veggies available. So, we did all that decided our start time... 5:00 and figured out how the night would go.

After that, we went to look for MOB brides. My Mom must have tried on 30 or so dresses... all awful. The lady said, "I found one more that you may like, but its expensive" my Mom tried it on and it was BEAUTIFUL!!! and it should be b/c it was $900! But, it was perfect. They offered to take a $100 off but my Mom still wasn't sure... after all, that's more than my dress was. That night we went to David's Bridal in Monroeville. YUCK! I didn't like it there anyways, it was pretty trashy when we were there. It was like where MOB dresses go to die. They had like 10 and there were hideous. So, my Mom decided on the expensive one and we went to have dinner.

Saturday, I got my hair colored and cut... maybe the last time before the wedding! Then I had my make-up trial! Ciel Cosmetics is AWESOME!!! Loved it and especially LOVED my fake eyelashes!! So excited for my make-up!

For lunch we decided to check out rehearsal location spots, so we went to Joe Mamas. They are reasonable and come highly recommended. The staff were so nice and the food was DELICIOUS!!!! The space is cute and casual- what we wanted, and the food is solid. Done. This is our rehearsal dinner spot.

After lunch, went to Nota Bene in Aspinwall and looked at invites. I pulled some from Wedding Paper Divas, but I was never in love. Well, I fell in love with an invite, but it was $650 for 75 invites. I simply cannot justify that. So, I found another that is ok, but it is cheap and cute. Also, it is all in one... folks tear off the response card and mail back like a postcard. It is cute, a little different and requires no extra postage. I need to get the wording to her this week and we're good to go.

Phew! I think that's it! All in all a busy, busy, busy weekend!!!

Saturday I had my first dress fitting and it went SO well! The dress fit almost perfectly and only needs a few nips and tucks on the bodice (you can prob see the pins along the bust in the pic) :) I was so happy with it and all my fears and reservations were put to rest. Now I KNOW I made the right decision! She's also sewing in cups for me that lift so I don't have to wear a bra! YES! Here are a few pictures!!

Hi Ladies! Thanks for the recommendations on my last posting.. I recently came across the Mayernik Center and we are going to check it out tommorrow.... and I'm really hoping that we love it! I emailed Betsy's Barn (took over a week to email me back) and I've emailed the Atrium and haven't gotten a reply so far. I really like that Suzi the Mayernik coordinator is so responsive! If anyone happened to have their ceremony/reception there, did you have a good experience with them? How many guests did you have? Is there anything that you didn't like about the site? Did you end up just using the 5 hours for the reception and not purchasing the extra hour? Sorry for the twenty questions....I'm really looking forward to your input!

Hi Ladies,

Has anyone used this Designated Driver service http://www.ddlimo.net/ (clicky)? I'm considering using this for my friend's bachelorette party. What I like about it is that I don't have to pay a deposit up front and each person who wants to use it pays a fee for each ride. So if anyone bails, other people don't get stuck with the bill. We aren't looking to cruise around, just for a ride to our destination.

I'm just hoping that it is a reputable service. I saw 'your designated driver' on the recommended vendors list, however they only have 13 passenger vehicles (we have ~20 people) and they charge a flat rate.

If anyone has any other suggestions, that would be helpful too!

TIA!

OK, so this is my situation/rant. I've debated a while on whether or not to post this, but here it goes:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Cliff notes version: My dad is still angry at my mom after a nasty divorce and almost disowned me when I went on vacation with her after college (since she paid for it with his alimony money). Now he is about to disown me for living with my fiance (we moved to Pgh together for jobs) and doesn't know whether he will walk me down the aisle.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Long version: My parents divorced when I was 12. It was a nasty, brutal divorce that went to the state supreme court. My mom has a lot of mental health issues and basically lost it after the divorce (eg- lots of hallucenations, etc). Long story short, I lived with my dad through middle school and high school. My dad remarried right after the divorce, and just about everyone believes that he was cheating on my mom with her when they stilled married.

When I was in college, my mom took me to Europe for my graduation present. My mom doesn't have a job so everything she has is basically from my father that he was forced by the court to give her. When my dad found out I was going, he threatened to disown me and didn't speak to me for months. He saw me going as stealing from him since it's my moms alimony. I still went, as I realized I would never have the chance to do something like that with my mom again, and by then my mom had already paid for it. Not going would have simply crushed her. My stepmom was able to patch things up with my dad months later, but my father is still very bitter about it.

I should state that I grew up in a VERY southern baptist environment. The entire town I grew up in was southern baptist, and the mentality is that if you aren't southern baptist, then you aren't christian. Period. When I went away to college, I went through various stages in my faith, but I eventually moved away from a lot of the teachings that my dad and stepfamily hold. I started dating my fiance, who was raised catholic, despite the protests of some close friends who are southern baptist. Last summer, I lost my job in KY and knew that I would have to look outside the state to find another one. My fiance had been looking for other jobs as well, but he also knew he would have to leave the state to find what he wanted and didn't want to leave me yet. When I lost my job, we decided that would just focus our searches to a few cities, and move together. Well, we both found jobs here in Pittsburgh at the same time.

When my stepmom guessed we would live together, she called me a whore, told me that my dad couldn't even look at me, and would never speak to me again if I moved in with my fiance (we weren't engaged at the time). She said he had never forgiven me to going on vacation with my mom, and that this was basically strike 2. I was crushed, but I expected it to be honest. My fiance and I both own condos in KY, so we couldn't afford to live separately in Pgh. It just wasn't an option. Plus, we knew we would be married, and we wanted to live together.

We got engaged in November, and dad congratulated us, but now he only answers his phone on holidays and birthdays. We were told that my fiance is not allowed at their house in Ky until 'our sinful life' ceases. We went to Thanksgiving dinner at my stepgrandmother's house, but my stepmom would not even look at me, and dad although polite, had been ignoring my phone calls for weeks. At Christmas I shipped a bunch of gifts down to them. Christmas day I spent at my mothers (she lives in Maryland now) and dad did answer the phone, but told me he didn't know if he would walk me down the aisle. He certainily won't pay for the wedding. The only gift we got was a gift basket (not sent until the end of January). Although nice, it had no card or anything, and it's something he would give one of his brothers (who he hates and has cut out of his life as well).

My family, both my mom's side and dad's whole side, are furious. Most people hate him and my stepmom. My friends are afraid that they will get drunk and will yell at him (or punch) at our wedding.

My stepsister is getting married in a few weeks, and I had to go to her bridal shower this weekend. At the shower, my stepmom again didn't even look at me. A few hours later I went the bridal store to get fitted for my bridesmaids dress, which funnily enough my stepmom said she would pay for months ago (even though I was living with the fiance by that point). When I walked out of the dressing room my stepmom and stepsis were both there. My stepmom talked to me like normal, like everything was fine. After the fitting I went out to dinner with all of them. It was the strangest thing ever. My stepsis and stepbro think that they will get over it, and that dad will walk me down the aisle eventually. One of my dad's brother's agree.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here is my problem- even if dad agrees to walk me down the aisle, he has hurt me, and by extention my family and fiance beyond repair. I want my dad to walk me down the aisle, but I also think the person walking me down should love me and care about what happens in my life. I'm not sure what I should do if he does say he wants to walk me down.

Ok, really, really long post. More than anything this was just a vent that I needed to do. I've been dealing with this for months and just needed to let it out a little.

Hello Pittsburgh brides!

I post here on occasion, though I'm not really a "regular," I have taken lots of great ideas and advice from this board, so I trust your opinions.

I picked five wonderful ladies to be in my wedding party. I have a close friend who I did not ask, who I later found out from two of my bridesmaids, was upset that she was not asked to be in the wedding. She told my one bridesmaid that she was not going to come to the wedding, and that she wished I had discussed it with her (ie, telling her that she wasn't in the wedding or why.) I never discussed it with her because I thought it would be a terrible thing to do - to sit her down and try to explain why she wasn't in the wedding. I would never do that to a friend.

I thought this had all blown over, as I have seen this friend numerous times since then and everything has been fine. Well...no. My friend approached another one of my bridesmaids and said that she was no longer upset, wanted to come to the wedding, but wanted to talk to me about it because she didn't want things to be awkward.

Here's my real issue: I realized a few months back that I really messed up, and I want this girl to be in the wedding. Not because she was upset that she wasn't asked, but because I truly want her up there. She's a great friend. But I haven't asked her because I didn't want it to look like I was asking her for the wrong reasons/a pity invite. I was hoping it would all just go away. But since it's not going to, I need to reach out to her.

What would you do? Should I explain to her that I was an idiot and have realized that I want her up there with me now and ask her to be a BM? Should I try and talk to her about it but not ask? I'm totally lost, and need some unbiased opinions. Help?

Edit - I know the Wedding Party board might be a better place for this question, but they tend to get a little crazy over there....

Hi! I'm new here on the boards, but I'm really excited that I now have a place to talk to other Pittsburgh brides :-)

So I just moved to Pittsburgh from Louisville, and everyone here is telling me that my fiance and I HAVE to have a cookie table of some kind. Before moving here I had never heard of people having cookies at weddings, but I was informed that in PA people have lots of cookies at their weddings and set up "cookie bars." As cool as a cookie bar sounds, about 85% of our guests are from out of town, and have never heard of cookies at weddings either. So they won't miss having a cookie bar. Even if we wanted a cookie bar, no one would be able to make all those cookies for us.

Will it be weird for our guests who are from PA to not have a cookie bar? Is this truly even a tradition in Pittsburgh? Some vendors we have checked out talked up about setting up a cookie bar, and when we said we weren't having one they gave us a look like we were crazy. When we talked about a groom's cake they said that was more of a southern tradition, although they had seen couples have grooms cakes. I thought that a lot of people had grooms cakes... but I guess not lol

Any suggestions for some nice centerpieces that don't require candles or tons of flowers?? Thanks!!

ps Go Steelers!
