FI and I are looking into two main options for our officiant.

Ideally, we would self-actualize the wedding, but that is illegal in RI.

Our first option would be to have his father ordained to perform the wedding. His parents are Christian, mine are a-religious (but identify as Christian), I am a non-theist and FI is an atheist. Despite that fact that we are not Christian, it has had a very strong cultural impact on us. It would also mean a lot to us for his dad to perform the act (or mom) because it expresses the acceptance and support we've received from them despite our own beliefs. Does anybody know the approximate cost and legality for having FFIL ordained? Btw, he does not live in RI (neither do we).

Our second choice would be have a humanist officiant. We do not belong to any humanist societies, but we support most of its principles and I consider myself humanist. I learned that the concept of having a post-legal ceremony is controversial, but there is a small possibility that it will happen. In this case, we would have a humanist ceremony with friends and family, reducing some of the confusion that arrises when a JP made it legal already, but community makes it official (for us), as the humanist ceremony would be analogous to a Catholic ceremony after the legal wedding. I tried googling for humanist officiants in RI, but didn't find a 'list' or any websites that seemed like good sources. Does anyone have any experience with humanist ceremonies/officiants?

Also, does anybody know if a wedding officiant that does NOT get their authority to do so from status as an eligible government official must then be classified as 'clergy?' What I mean is, by getting ordained for this wedding, would somebody be clergy? I saw a few lines of RI law, but because they didnt address civilians being ordained explicitly, I couldn't tell if I was reading too much into the law.

Sorry in advance for all the long reviews. Over the past year I found the post wedding reviews from brides to be incredibly helpful so I spent a lot of time on mine. We had an amazing day and amazing wedding and wish all future brides the same!!

Venue - Newport Yachting Center – A

I broke out the venue and the caterer separately because as many of you know Blackstone which originally managed the Newport Yachting Center venue was bought and is no longer part of the Newport Harbor Association. As a result they will no longer manage the Yachting Center. The venue was absolutely beautiful and we were so happy with how everything came out. The tent is huge and was perfect for our 200+ person wedding. Our DJ provided some up lighting around the walls of the tent which I would definitely recommend. It helped soften all the bright whiteness of the tent. We had our sunset ceremony outside on the dock overlooking the water and the Newport Bridge (thank goodness Saturday was about 10 degrees warmer than the rest of the weekend.) All and all we were thrilled with the location.

Caterer – Blackstone – A+

I cannot say enough about Blackstone and Karen Conley . They were amazing. 5 Star all the way! The food and service was incredible. It was a chilly night so Karen had a few surprises that blew us away. Karen surprised us by serving hot apple cider while guests arrived for the ceremony and she handed Pashmina’s for all the ladies who were cold. There was always a staff member nearby bring us Hors d'oeuvres or filling drinks while we were taking pictures and even making sure I had a shawl or something to warm me up. The food was tremendous! They even packed up all the extras left over from the table and managed to locate the toasting glasses which had been left who knows where. They took amazing care us all night. Cannot say enough about them!!

Viking Tours – Trolley – A

Fabulous job. Incredibly professional. We had the trolley for 7 hours running a route between the hotel our venue. The driver took excellent care of the guests we couldn’t have been happier.

DJ Ramu & the Crew – A+

All I have to say is WOW what an amazing find! We actually had DJ Ramu’s brother, DJ Imho who was phenomenal. Very professional and yet at the same time knows how to keep the party going. I had so many people compliment the music and honestly the dance floor was never empty. His package is all inclusive, he doesn’t have any up-sells which was awesome. He provided up-lighting around the tent as part of our package and a flat screen TV that played videos from us, music videos and more. He had a fantastic assistant that would go out in the crowd and dance with some of the guests to keep everything flowing which was an awesome touch. He actually ran out of business cards because so many folks asked for his contact info. Awesome job!!

Please forgive..:)

My second question 'o' the day is if anyone has any thoughts on where a good, casual place in South County (the closer to Narragansett the better) would be to host our rehearsal dinner. We have about 30 people, and a realxed, fun c-a-s-u-a-l environment is a must! We have, again, (see a them here?!) a tiny budget - about $18-20 pp including drinks.

BBQ, burgers, whatever-- just needs to be in South County, taste good, and be a place where people can get together and relax tand have fun the night before the big day!

Thanks again for your advice.

My Grandmother and my Aunt are throwing an engagement party for my FI and I, however they are keeping me completely involved (which i love!) is that unordinary and/or selfish to help plan my own party?? Also, I was just wondrering if anyone had any ideas for an inexpensive location for an engagement party. Just trying to keep it simple and informal. We were originally going to throw the party at my grandmothers house, we just werent sure if the space would be an issue. It'll probaby be in June so an outdoor venue is acceptable as well! Thanks in advance!

Hi girls, I am looking for a salon/spa place to get ready at the day of the wedding, anywhere between North Kingstown and Lincoln. There aren't many of us, probably 5 or 6, and I'd love a place where we can chill on couches and drink champagne, etc.

I don't think my hair will be complicated, just an easy up-do, but what I am kind of picky about is the makeup, I don't really want a place that only uses one brand, I want more of a makeup artist who might have a whole selection of brands, etc (I love makeup, especially brands like Urban Decay). Is there any places like that? Or will I have to find a salon for hair and get an artist to come to me? Or should I just deal with it and go with a place that maybe uses one brand?

I should also add that I am trying to find a place that doesn't break the bank. :^)

Thanks!
