Soo this is my very first Military Ball with my FI and I anticipate many many more. He hopes to make a career out of the Air Force (now he is thinking a Marine). What are the the basics of the ball. How should I act as a guest?? I want to make him look good and do NOT want to do anything to embarass him. The recieving line sounds kind of scary :p His ball is on November 4th on a cruise ship off of Navy Pier in Chicago. Should I buy a nice dress coat? Should I bring a clutch? How should I do my hair? Am I thinking too much into things? lol Any advise would be GREATLY appreciated!!!

Anyway, we're going to do lots of silver, pinks and purples, but it has to be super Christmasy. We're going to put some machines on the float so that members can "work out" during the Parade, We'll have our 9ft Christmas Tree all decked out in Curves colors. We're buying out the 2 local Walmarts supply of pink santa hats. My dad and I are building an arch to go across the middle and we want to spell something out (Probably just Curves). We're going to use the Tutu's that I made, and string Christmas lights in with them.. LOTS of Lights. We can't have a Santa on the float (The kiddies would freak out if there were more than 1 Santa in the Parade). We have to think of ways to make it more Christmasy, and give it a name.

ETA:Sorry.. I got super distracted at work.

A mutual friend of ours told me that he wanted to introduce me to someone that he thought was a great guy. Well…he was right! We met and hit it off right away; we had so much in common. We were both serious about this relationship and got close really fast. We became best friends and after 7 months of dating we started to talk about the idea of marriage. I knew he was the one for me. I have never met someone more considerate and loving than he is. I find him fascinating and attractive and smart. To me, he’s perfect. Around the time we started talking about marriage he informed me that he spoke to an Army recruiter and I was devastated. I knew this was something he was interested in and always had been but I was hoping that he would find a regular job since he already had his bachelor’s degree. After long discussions and more talking to the recruiter’s office they offered him a position and he took it.

Anyway, back to the reason why I’m here.

We had been talking about marriage and I was showing him rings for a couple months now. I knew he was in no shape financially to buy a ring anytime soon but I wanted him to get an idea of what I was interested in. Well our 1st anniversary came around and we decided to spend the day at Disneyland. Halfway through the day he led me to Snow White’s wishing well and started babbling about his feelings, etc. which only confused the heck out of me. I didn’t know why he was talking about this when we should have been going on rides and eating unhealthy food! Next thing I know he is down on one knee and pulls a black box out from behind him. I gasped so loud I’m sure the people in the parking structure heard me. I did not see this coming for one second and with a ring in the style that I had showed him! I was so surprised and happy and hysterical all at the same time. It was the best day of my life. (If you want you can read the story in more detail on my bio page)

That was almost 11 months ago. The first 6 months of our engagement we did not do very much in planning or anything. Then he left for basic training and I knew he was to start OCS immediately after so I would not see him for nearly 6 months. After he left we set a date in June 2012. The first thing I did was buy my wedding dress. I got it on sale and bought it as more of a base dress. (I’m planning to change the top shape of it and add other things that I had always dreamed of on my dress.) It's going to end up as a sweetheart top, the bottom of the dress is meant to be like a ball gown with pickups (that sounds horrible but I promise it looks very nice) and I am adding roses of the same material and color as the dress into the pickups. I am also going to be adding a sash to the dress and most likely put some kind of design in the very front. Probably a fleur de lis.

Soon after that I started searching for a venue and fell in love with one. I sent my FI pictures of it and he agreed that it looked nice. We will be getting married at the Heritage Museum in Santa Ana, It's a huge property that owns 2 Victorian houses, an orange grove, a hiking trail, a working blacksmith shop, and beautiful gardens. It was so beautiful and I knew this was going to be it.

Since that time I have booked our photographer and our florist who see my FFIL. He's a chiropractor. They are doing an exchange of services which won't cost me a penny! I have already met with them and set everything up. I have also seen their work and was very impressed. My photographer has done a number of weddings of big executives, CEOs, and even did Weird Al's wedding. She also knows David Tuterra. Was thinking about trying to sign up for My Fair Wedding but I don't want my wedding too over the top and I was also pretty nervous. Not gonna lie.

I also found a DJ who is a friend of my uncle's. My uncle got him to do our wedding for dirt cheap.

As of right now, I am planning to have my hairstylist friend do my hair on the day of the wedding and possibly my makeup too. I'm just a little nervous to talk to her about prices right now.

I am leaving for FI's OCS graduation soon and the day after we both come home we are meeting with the caterer to finalize the menu and do tasting! Can't wait for that. I love yummy food.

The only thing I feel like I have left to do besides find a seamstress in the Orange County area is pick a place to do our wedding cake. I have had 2 people suggest the same place to me so I will be checking that out soon. Can't find any prices anywhere so it makes me nervous.

Oh! Our wedding colors are: Dusty Rose, Slate Blue, and Soft Gold.
We are going to have a Marie Antoinette/Versailles inspired reception. It's not a theme but more of an atmosphere with French accents, lots of petite deserts, champagne fountain, masquerade masks, etc.

I found the lovliest people on etsy to help make my vision come true. There is a girl in England who makes BEAUTIFUL masks and they aren't too expensive. I have already ordered 15 masks from her and I'm thinking that might not be enough for our 120 people reception. We will have 15 tables and each mask will be started as a centerpiece which the guests can pick up and use in the photobooth that my cousin is MAKING for me!

There is another girl who runs her company on etsy and I actually found her after pinning pictures of her gorgeous invitations on pinterest. They were PERFECT! So I ordered my Save the Date cards, Invitations, and Thank you Cards through her. I just recieved my STD cards a few days ago. I'm waiting for the wax seals to arrive (they go with my french 'theme') and am planning to send out the STD cards in December. Hoping to take engagment pictures soon as well so we can send them out with the cards. I know it's a bit late for E pics since we've been engaged for almost 11 months. Whatever.

And lastly I found another girl who made me a beautiful dusty rose colored giant rose that is attached to a big ostrich feather which I will be attaching to my birdcage veil. It's really lovely. My cousin who is my MOH stated that she could make my veil for me. I'm so excited!

My cousin is my MOH, my two sisters will serve as bridesmaids (1 is probably considered a JR), as well as 2 of my closest friends. My FI has 2 brothers and 3 best friends so the numbers worked out.

We also still need to start our registry and plan and book our honeymoon. We are going to Ireland for 2 weeks! :)

Well I think that's about it. I don't know if I'm leaving anything else off the to-do list. Let me know if anyone wants to see pictures of anything I have so far and I'll do my best to track some down!

I'm glad this board is here as I know I will have many military questions because I still feel like I know next to nothing about it.

Thanks for reading!

So, I was sitting in my apartment watching TV and I see something move out of the corner of my eye, think my eyes are playing tricks on me I just ignore it. 5 seconds later I see a mouse... I scream... he probably screams...and then he starts running around what is my bedroom....darting everywhere. I am freaking out as much as he is. I call my dad freaking out... what do I do? chase after it with a knife? cry in a corner?, stand on a chair (Yes... I did this) He just tells me to go to walmart and get some traps and go to bed. HELLO the mouse is in my room!! Probably hanging out in my bed as scared to death as I am.

I run to walmart to get some mouse traps...the ones where you can't see the dead mouse in them. (Breaks my heart..I don't want to kill a little mouse... but GTFO of my apartment..this is america.. haven't you heard of the 'make my day' law) So, I tidy my apartment up... put any thing that might possibly give off a food smell in the fridge and make sure all the dishes are put away. I then call my sister up to see if she will take me in.

I feel so violated, there is a mouse in my apartment probably sleeping in my bed, taking a shower, eating my peanut butter... Leave it to the first freeze to bring in the critters.
Hey all! My sister-in-law is married to a Navy Seal. Even though we live thousands of miles apart, we are very close. Her husband is gone again - has been since July. She doesn't know where he is or when he will get back. She has no family near her. How can I support her from this far away? A lot of times it seems as though she is too busy to even talk on the phone - she has three kids and feels like she is basically trying to raise them by herself. I want to be there for her so badly but don't have the capability to visit often. Any advice?

Hey Ladies,

So, I'm sure some of you have read that FI and I are getting our E pics done tomorrow. I'm super excited; I actually just got off the phone with my photographer!!

I was looking for suggestions of any unique/cool e pics you guys have seen? They can be serious, cute, funny, artsy, whatever. I would also love anything you guys have seen that might be more geared toward servicemembers. FI wants to wear his whites for a few of the pics (he'll be wearing his blues for our wedding) and I know my photographer isn't really familiar with military stuff (living in a non-mil area). I have read that it can be kind of taboo to do pics in uniform, but he really wants them... so I want to be sure they are classy...

I have some ideas, but its always neat to get other people's input!

We are going to be doing some outdoors on my farm, some outdoors by the river and downtown, and possibly some in a restraunt/whatever setting.

<3 thanks ladies!

So FMIL sends FI an email today telling him that she's coming to Miami with her flavor-of-the-week for 4 days and will not have any time to see him (or me, but whatever. At least I was mentioned, I guess?). FI goes on to suggest breakfast, or lunch, or coffee, or anything - promising he won't get in her way (it breaks my heart to see him beg his Mom to spend time with him). She says she doesn't know, she'll have to check with her boyfriend. Ugh!

And then she tells FI that she's taking "the girls and Joe", meaning FI's 3 sisters and brother-in-law) and her granddaughter (FI's niece) to Cancun for Thanksgiving. Um..... wtf?!!! She's paying for all of them to go, and never invited FI. What's more, FI is paying himself (er, I'm helping!) so he can go up to visit for those 5 days before Christmas.

I'm so angry, I could spit bullets! FI told me that he wants me to let it go so it doesn't stress him out - for his own sanity, he has to forgive and forget, he has decided, or else he'd have no relationship with her at all. So I'm here telling you ladies, since I have to smile for FI. When really I want to pull her teeth out and tell her that she's no kind of mother!

The confession is, while yes, it wastes glorious amounts of time at work, I've actually started to use the dang thing. True story: dinner tonight is a pintrest recipe (chicken enchilada pasta, I'll let you know how it goes) and I've actually started looking in my closet for ways to put together outfits I like on there. And I own most of it!! Just suck at putting stuff together.

I'm obsessed with Pintrest.

It seems FI and I are getting another taste of the Marines lately. I posted a few days ago how in 2 weeks I'm supposed to fly out to visit him for the Marine Corps ball and we were also scheduled to get our engagement pictures taken. We've had this planned for months lol But we all know that being able to plan things is not normally how it goes in the military. Well last night we find out that now he's going into the field for training while I'm supposed to be out there. No ball and no pictures. I'm not sure whether I should shorten my trip while I'm out there, or just save my vacation time for when we can actually spend some time together. I'm not upset and I'm fully aware that things like this happen and that I just have to get over it. It's just a bummer when you have all these special things to look forward to with each other and then it all changes with one phone call. Grrrrr. I'm eating pizza tonight.

So I'm totally excited that our wedding is finally around the corner after an 18 month engagement, but now I'm getting bumbed thinking about our long distance marriage after the honeymoon. I just started a new job as an RN as a new grad (so I basically had to beg for it) and I need to stick around until at least the one year mark if I hope to get another job wherever we're stationed...which is 3 months after the wedding and thats if I can get another one right away. We've already been long distance for 2 years while he gets his Masters degree (5 hours away). The wedding is the week after his graduation and the then we go on our honeymoon, and then he has to report to his ship, which likely will be in Alaska (I'll be coming back to my job on the east coast)! Just finding it hard to get excited about being married, apart, oh, and still living with my parents. Just wondering if anyone else is in the same boat?
