The Knot has so many amazing photographers listed and the price range is very diverse. How do you choose a photographer? Does anyone have any tips on things to look for or that are necessities for the big day?

HELP!! Staging ceremony photos

For some reason I look like a BEAST when someone takes a candid picture of me. My arms become 10x fatter. I get a billion chins... and my mouth always looks awkward. I can't take staged pictures either because I don't know how to smile on command.

But it's the candid pictures of the ceremony that I'm TERRIFIED of. This is the most important day of my life... and I want to share my pictures with the whole world.

So, is it okay to stage the ceremony pictures? Even the shots of my dad walking me down the aisle--and then me and my husband's kiss at the end?

I spent all weekend searching portfolios, emailing photographers, calling and asking questions prices etc.

After all of this I write up a rather lengthy email, with links to galleries, prices, availability etc. to my FMIL to get her feedback (who is contributing to planning and some financially) and I no sooner hit send, she calls my phone to start fussing about the prices - she didn't even click my links :(

I looked through the entire TK list of photographers in my area - over 200, did my own searches, phonebook, FB, word of mouth, etc. to find all photographers, within a price, with good quality photos and package offerings. I guess she was under the impression wedding pictures are like senior portraits (~$200) and she oviously wasn't expecting what I sent her, and it made her even more sad when she found out that some don't even come with prints. Now she thinks I need to just book a bridal session and just "take pictures" at the reception. Sigh.

Needless to say i've started my "photo money jar" on the counter for my own savings because i'll be damned if i'm not going to have good wedding pictures. I'm not trying to be high maintenance at all, i've just sacrificed a lot elsewhere and photos are something I know i'll keep, and my family will keep forever so it makes sense to me that you spend a considerable amount on that.

Alexandria Photo Sites

I'm getting married in November in Alexandria, VA, and I'm looking for a good post-ceremony photo location. Mount Vernon apparently doesn't allow professional wedding photography. Ideally I'd like the place to have both indoor and outdoor photo possibilities, since weather in November can be unpredictable. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thank you!

Videographer taking 7 months?!

So my sis got married back on October 9th of last year and the videographer has yet to send them the final product. My sis has emailed this lady several times and keeps getting excuses as to why it's not done yet. And in one email, she said it could take up to 9 months?! Has anyone ever run in to this or know of anyone who has? I'm fighting the urge to email this lady myself to find out what the deal is.

Finding outdoor spots in DC to take wedding ceremony

Hello:
I am a first timer on the sight, and i am getting married in September 2011. But i am the hardest time finding a park, or some where nice to take some photos outdoors. My ceremony starts at 5:30pm and the reception starts at 7:00pm. I am taking pictures before the ceremony and after the ceremony. but the problem is the time with the photography is coming at 3pm, and i don't want to be late for my ceremony. The ceremony is at Allen Chapel AME, 2498 Alabama Ave SE, and the reception is located at Clarion Hotel 6400 Oxon Hill Road, Oxon Hill MD. We are really tight on time with the limo and photographer. I need some advice for this problem. I want something close in the area.

I practically lived on this site while planning my French Quarter - New Orleans wedding from Southern California. If you are reading this I can only assume you are looking for a photographer in the New Orleans area. I stumbled across a recommendation for Babs Evangelista on this message board. Choosing a photographer is not an easy task and you often wonder is the work your seeing their best or is it typical for what they do. I won't ramble on too long but, I booked Babs and she was so friendly and helpful. I didn't get to actually meet her until just hours before our wedding. She is such a cool person with a super bubbly personality. She made shoot our photos FUN! I was at so much ease during our First Look session I almost forgot I was getting married in a few hours. While shooting the ceremony and reception she was there to capture all the true emotion and beauty without being right in the middle of things. All of my guests absolutely loved her too. The very next day she sent a sneak peak of the pics via Facebook and all I can say was WOW. I was so happy I only had to wait 4 weeks to get all the photos because the preview she sent was making me want the final product now! Babs has a true eye for beauty and captures the moment in a photojournalist style. Every single one of my pictures was fabulous! Looking at her portfolio that is a true representation on what she will do for you - those aren't just her "best" shots. If you need a photog for your engagement, wedding, anniversary or any event look up Babs - you won't be disappointed!

Make-Your-Own-Album?

Our photographer quoted their price - reasonable, and well within our budget! And then they quoted the album cost - $1000! For a book! I love photographs as much as the next person, but I'm choking on that price.

Any insight on a website or service to make your own album? We'll have rights to all our photographs, and we have graphic design background (and the fact that I work for a magazine and have our layout editor ready to help for free).

What's the comparative advantage of going with your photographer versus doing one yourself?

Okay so I really want to have my wedding around the time the sun is going down. Not when it gets dark just when it isn't so bright. I want to have candles down the aisle and what not. I don't have a set photographer yet otherwise I would just ask them. My questions is will there be any problems with getting good pictures during the ceremony with the lack of lighting from the sun? Oh it is out side.

First off, please do not turn this into a debate about tattoos and/or their appropriateness in a wedding... (I have multiple, FI has two full sleeves onto his hands and multiple elsewhere, and nearly everyone in WP has at least one.)

Onto my question: being that we'll have such a coloroful WP, would requesting the photographer get a shot of the WP with tattoos be odd? I will have one visible on my back/shoulder, two of my BM's have them on their necks, and one BM has one on her back/between her shoulders. Plus, FI has all of his...

It's something that we celebrate as a couple, and I'm sort of wondering if we can make a point of remembering it in the wedding photos, as well, but I'm not sure how a photographer would go about that or if it's a really odd request.

I know, I know: Biggest wedding faux paux short of wearing a bridal speedo. The thing is, my budget for the entire wedding is around $2000, including dress and reception and everything. My FI and I are engineering students so money is tight.

I read the posts in the photography section, but essentially they all say the same thing: don't do it. Since our budget is less than most people spend on the photo package alone, it's not feasible to hire a photographer, so I was wondering if anyone had advice for hiring an amateur, like what to tell them, places to be, what I should tell family to prepare, anything! I'm so lost!

Side note: She really is good, she's done proms for a local high school, graduation photos, family shoots, and her shots are very good and she is amazing at photo touching with the programs she has. I'm just nervous about getting everything together, because at the end of the day, all you have are the pictures.

help! I want a super 8 fun wedding video

Ok, so i too was going to ex the videographer. I find watching other peoples painful and lame, until i stumbled upon a blog called sharkpig. He did an awsome job on super 8's and made them speed up and do a whole bunch of sweet things. There was no talking, just music and fun shots. I love the idea, problem...hes on the west coast and I live in ny. I am getting married in the poconos, pa. Does anyone know of a reasonable company that offers the same type of video? I saw one from well spun in philly. Anyone else?

p.s. i went to the tasting today at my venue and the guy had no idea what i was talking about...other than it was old and that i most def would want HD. ugh!

I first met Amber from forevercandid (before I was engaged) at my brother's wedding. She was right in the Limo with us capturing all the moments and even when the Limo broke down due to extreme heat she made the best of it by taking my brother and his wife to the side and taking some really great fun pics. I liked her style and personality so much that I asked her if she would do my wedding pictures someday :)...two months later i got engaged and the day after I bought my dress and emailed Amber :)...Amber is awesome! We Just had our engagement session with her and she did a great job!! I really appreciated her flexibility especially with our crazy new england weather. During the session she made us feel comfortable and let us just be ourselves and do our thing...but thankfully gave us guidance when we needed it. When looking at the proofs i didn't feel like i was just looking at pictures i was remembering and looking at a moment. I Know the wedding pictures will be amazing and I am confident she will be able to capture our day to perfection. THANKS Amber :)

bridal Photo shoot info please

I browsed the first 5 pages of posts or so and couldn't find what I needed so forgive me if this has been posted before...

I am a write and this week i ma doingan article on wedding photography. I am from the East coast originally and Bridal photo shoots with just the bride aren't big there but I want to include them in my article. What I am looking for is just details about bridal photo shoots...

How important are they where you are from?

What poses are standard?

What is the average cost?

What is done with the photos? Are they just put in an album or used elsewhere?

Do you still get engagement photos? trash the dress photos?

Any other interesting tidbits or stories about your bridal photos would help! Thanks in advance!
