Hair & makeup trial

So much of this wedding-planning business seems like a giant chicken-egg paradox. My current project is hair & makeup. My wedding is 8/2/14. My knot checklist says that I should schedule hair/makeup trials by end of June, but I don't want to book an artist before having a trial, because I am choosing rather blindly based on price and a few reviews.

But, I don't have my veil and hair accessories yet, so doing something now seems premature.

When do people suggest having trial appointments? Is it necessary to have all hair pieces at the trial?

Thanks for your help.

I didn't have anything for my hair and makeup trial.  I recommend to book trials soon!  I found the only way a makeup artist or hair salon (if not your usual salon) would book you in is if you left a deposit, and I wasn't leaving a deposit until I had a trial.  Good thing I had it early, because I hated my first makeup trial and ended up looking for someone new.

  • I had originally planned to hold off on booking hair and makeup until around the 4-6 month mark. After I contacted my top choice for makeup at about 10 months out and found out she was booked, I started to worry. I contacted a bunch of other MUAs and got their pricing info, saw pictures, read reviews, and narrowed down my list. I had my makeup trial at about 5 months, and booked shortly after that. I have my hair trial next weekend, but I've been in contact with her since July or August.

  • I'm a makeup artist and I've never had a bride who had all of her accessories at the trial. I lucked out once and did a trial the same day the bride-to-be had her hair trial but that is not common at all. You'll be fine. A good artist can work around pretty much anything and can make minor adjustments day-of if necessary to pull the look together.
