Evening winter wedding - bridesmaids dress colour?

We're having our wedding in the evening in a city in which it snows (a lot!). Many of the pictures will be taken when the sun starts to go down (not full light), and because of the season and our venue location, the background will be old stone buildings and snow. Given all this, I'm wondering what colours will look best on the bridesmaids. I've been thinking of asking each of them to choose a black cocktail dress. Thoughts or suggestions?

Re: Evening winter wedding - bridesmaids dress colour?

  • I like black and navy is nice too (although little biased b/c my girls are wearing navy).  I also like a deep charcoal gray.  Everyone looks good in neutrals as opposed to a color so my opinion is stick to a neutral color. It's hard to control for weather/lighting of sunset so I wouldn't use that to guide you.  I would just find a dress you like or lock onto a color you like.
  • I'm having a winter wedding (evening) and the BM dresses will either be charcoal or eggplant purple.  I also love navy and taupe-y colors for winter.
  • I don't think you can ever go wrong with black. But Gray will also play nicely into the winter season and look nice. Still concerned, go to the home improvement store and find color swatches in the colors you are considering. Take them to the place you want to go do pictures and hold the colors against the stone to see what the color contrast looks like. But unless you go with black, make sure to pick two or three color options in case one of the colors your BM doesn't look good in a specific color. Not everyone can pull off every color.

  • We're having a winter evening wedding and the BMs are wearing black dresses. I think it's classic and elegant.

  • We're getting married in mid-November so not quite officially winter but definitely a chance of snow.  Our BM's are wearing black.  Our colors are black and champagne and the three BM's are picking their own black dresses for the wedding- black won because they agreed it's easier to find than champagne and more likely they could find something they'd wear again.

I also love navy or dark purples for a winter wedding.  Any jewel tone is really striking against snow (think emerald, sapphire, ruby red- all gorgeous). Dark grey could also look amazing. I'm probably no help lol.

  • I'm getting married in two weeks (woohoo!!) and while it is a daytime wedding my MOH is wearing champagne and black.  I was going to do Navy, but then both moms bought navy/dark blue dresses and I didn't want everyone to "match" so I went with the champagne/taupe color with black lace.

I wouldn't be concerned about color for day versus night.  As long as the material is appropriate for the weather the color can be just about anything you want.  If anything if you are taking pictures at sunset I would do a LIGHTER color so you show up in the picture better.
