Son of a...

This is just a silly rant, but still kind of disappointing. I hadn't been on TK in quite awhile, and I stopped surfing wedding stuff for the past 6 months or so while I've been dealing with holidays and family stuff, etc. When I first started searching around, I knew I wanted something to reflect our laid back, country personalities. I like Mason Jars. I like Lace. I even like some *small* touches of burlap. I like wooden signs, and have even liked some bridesmaid dresses with cowboy boots. Yeah, I know, I'm horrible. Anyways, I've had thoughts of these things before they got super popular.

So now I see that wedding land is rustic-palooza, with lace and burlap everything, mason jar everything. There's even a thread on SB about "Lace + Burlap = vomit". I'm not one to change things I genuinely like because of other people's opinions... but, ew. If I continue with my ideas I'm going to be in the pinterest threw up on my wedding club.

  • I love all that stuff too! I didn't know so many thought it was awful until I seen it on here
  • @Angusaur

I personally only think it is awful if / when its overdone (which is very easy to do)

  • If it's done in a way where I can see the couple's personality in it, it's lovely. I only think it's awful when it just looks like everything was pulled off Pinterest with no thought to what the couple's real tastes are.
  • If I saw mason jars and rustic decorations in your home and knew that it was truly "you" I would not mind one bit. But I went to a wedding over the summer that I dubbed the "pinterest explosion" and it was awful because it didn't look like it fit their personality. It literally looked like she just crammed as many things she saw on pinterest as possible! uuuk

  • So if I approach this with the "Less is More" mindset, all will be well. This is definitely our personalities. And, I plan to incorporate Superman somewhere in there. That's totally us.

  • I got all excited about flipping chalkboards before I realized everyone in their mom was excited about chalkboards too. Our wedding isn't really rustic though, just playful.

I think if it fits you, it's not overdone, and you haven't copied every single piece of decor you have from pinterest, you'll be fine. There are tons of ways to do mason jars without making it look like pinterest vomit.

YES! Approach it with the less is more mindset and you will be golden!

  • My October wedding had sunflowers, and the only thing everyone said about them was, "OMG, HisGirl, those are SO YOU!" -- my favourite colour is yellow, and it always has been, so sunflowers in shades of yellows matched my personality and no one thought anything of it other than, "Oh, that's how she is."

I think if it reflects you as a couple, and it's not over-done or contrived, people won't think Pinterest threw up on your wedding.

Also remember -- you're planning a wedding, so you're looking at and for wedding stuff actively and consistently. Other people aren't. So while YOU may have seen this idea 10,000,000 times on Pinterest, that doesn't mean everyone else has seen it done to death.

I'm gonna go with 'not my circus, not my monkeys.'
  • I would say, if you genuinely love the stuff, then use it! It's okay. I think it's evident when people pick something because they love it and don't just choose every single thing that grabs their attention on Pinterest.

  • For the Superman thing, maybe incorporate green crystals or the like in your centerpieces. And if your Fi is really into Superman, you could get him a ring made from an asteroid.
  • Wait, do people hate sunflowers now? Since when are they trendy?! I love sunflowers and intend to use them at my July wedding. Seemed appropriate.

Funny, though because my cousin is planning one of those burlap and lace weddings. Again, they are cute- just far from original. To each her own, I suppose.

  • I think it's the combination of sunflowers with lace, burlap and mason jars, but I personally haven't seen a whole lot of trendy sunflower stuff. I think as long as you don't go, "Look at me! I'm using sunflowers! No one has ever had this idea before! I'm so unique!" then I think you're good.
  • Even though my wedding is rustic (in a small wooden chapel at a camp in the woods - where we met as kids), I don't want to describe it as rustic because of the Pinterest connotations.  Pinterest has hijacked the word and turned it into a style.
