XP: Superstitions

FI and I are still deciding on what time to have our wedding. We are thinking about 6:00 pm.  A lot of people I know think it's 'bad luck' to get married on the hour, because the hands of the clock are going down and that you should get married on the half hour that way the hands are going up. Anyone else heard of this or went by this? What other superstitions are there?

I don't believe in luck so I don't buy the whole good luck/bad luck time.

Re: XP: Superstitions

  • Same as @elBecko actually: I think the only superstition we're following is that Fi doesn't want to see me beforehand.  His twist on this is a little bit different: I think it's more that he doesn't want to see the dress or know what I will look like.  We haven't discussed it, but I'm pretty sure staying the night before together would be fine with him; but he won't look at pictures of dresses I tried on, either on me or on the model online.  This is going to make taking photos during cocktail hour really annoying, but I know people do it all the time.

"I'm not a rude bitch.  I'm ten rude bitches in a large coat."

  • I'm ignoring that one and having the ceremony start at 11:00 am. 10:30 was too early and I felt that 11:30 would be too late.

  • I've never even heard that superstition before.
  • I've never heard that one before. Our wedding is starting at 4:00 on the dot.

FI is adamant against a first look, but I think that's probably more out of tradition than superstition.

  • I've never heard of that one myself. We are getting married at 6:30, but pretty much because that is what the venue offered and we were cool with it. We will probably be doing a first look because we don't want to miss the cocktail hour lol. I also think it will help with nerves.

  • FI and I won't see each other before the wedding. And we're going to follow an old Irish superstition and make sure a man is the first to congratulate us on our marriage. We've got a bunch of other little Irish superstitions we'll be following as well.

  • I'm surprised by how many people haven't heard of this superstition! I wonder if it's just really old or if its regional. I didn't tell my FI about it because I don't believe in it, but he just texted me and said, "How about 6:30, that way we are on the upswing". Too funny. So apparently FI is superstitious :)

  • I have never heard that superstition and the reason we are getting married at 6 30 is because sunset is at 6 10-6 15 and we are facing west towards the Pacific with a wall of windows. FI has also seen me in my dress and we are doing a first look.
