Is anyone sending Invites/Anniuncements to Congress/White House/etc?

Fi's sister sent a birth announcement to theWhite House and they got back a cool congratulatory card signed by the President (well, copied, but you know).

I thought these would be pretty cool momentos for my wedding scrapbook.

Anyone else planning something similar?

  • Nope, but that is because I have no respect for our current president or the vast majority of the members of Congress.

You could likely send them internationally if you want: the Pope, Dali Lama, NASA.
  • I think we will send one to the White House to get the card back.  Fi has a card congratulating him on his birth from President Reagan, so I think a wedding congratulatory card would be awesome to have.  Plus I'm a supporter of President Obama so it would also be meaningful for me.  Not so sure I would do that if, say, W were still President.

Do Senators and Congresspeople have similar policies where they will send you a card? I always thought that was just a President thing.

Not sure actually. I'd imagine so, as it's easy enough and I'm sure they get loads of spam mail.
  • No. We invited people we actually know to our wedding. I don't understand how these things are mementos for people.

  • Nah, I'm cheap.

  • I sent an invitation to POTUS & FLOTUS and Mickey and Minnie. I got a card "signed" by the Obamas, and a postcard from the Mice. Just a cute souvenir to have.
  • I had no idea you could do that! I am def going to do it. I think it would be cool. And who knows, maybe they'll be in NYC for the weekend and make an appearance ;)

  • That mickey and minnie one sound super cute! I totally want to do that.

No we did not.  I find ZERO reasons why to waste people's  (and sometimes taxpayer's) time to decline an invitation that is clearly to  get something back from to put in a scrapbook or get on social media.

So much this. I'm a high school English teacher and lead a relatively low-key life and I sure as hell wouldn't have time to respond to the potentially dozens....? hundreds....? I don't even know how many people do this.....invitations from people for some memento for them, so I can't imagine our nation's leaders have time for this.

What's it a memento of, exactly? You don't know them. They don't know you. You didn't meet them. It would be like me ordering a pic or postcard online for someplace I've never been. Oh, look at my memento from Germany where I never went and wasn't even sent to me from someone I know who is there! It just makes no sense to me.

  • Nope. But I will be in DC the week after my wedding. I want to go by the IRS and just give the building the finger

I don't see the point in sending an extra invitation to receive a faked note by an imaginary character or some strangers. I think it's a bit ridiculous.

Definitely would not hang it in my house...
  • We sent one to the Pope, because we thought it would be cool to have the Holy Father's blessing.

I don't at all get the appeal of Disney characters.

I think it's cute but I most likely won't actually do it. I think the Mickey and Minnie one would be cute for a kids birthday, if they did that.

The Pope thing is nice if you are catholic. My grandpas family has those and they really treasure them since they're devout Catholics. I think they got them for their anniversary as well.
  • The Pope one would be really nice. I have a friend who honeymooned in Italy, and she and her husband had their marriage blessed by the pope. I think that was pretty cool.

  • I'm not planning any of them, personally, but I've seen the Disney ones more often than any of the others ones on these boards.  I think you can also send one to Cinderella and Prince Charming and get a similar momento.
