Wasn't sure whether to buy from Light in the Box due to mixed reviews, but I went for it...

I bought this dress http://www.lightinthebox.com/Ball-Gown-Bateau-Tea-length-Satin-Wedding-Dress_p360247.html and it is honestly AMAZING. I love it. I dislike shopping, so this was a complete success. I need it tailored badly, because it's big in many places, and a bit too long, but the quality feels really good. I am no pro on dress quality or anything, but for $189-ish (after shipping/sizing/etc), I think it's a steal. I'm very impressed.

All-in-all, if you are looking at a dress there because of price or just because you find one you like, I'd say you should take the risk like I did.

I did an unboxing here, if you are interested http://youtu.be/PNVzqknyG18 because I had trouble finding many unboxings of any wedding gowns from LITB :)

Hope this helps!

  • if its really big in places then its not a good fit gown meaning they did not properly fit it to your measurements,

personaly me i would never shop online on those websites they are steeling pictures of designer gowns and trying to replicate them without the patterns .

in the end it might cost you just as much in alterations as it would if you bought a new gown off the rack at a sample store or a discount bridal salon where you would need say only 150 in alterations vs 400 in alterations from this china dress.

most of the china gowns come made with liner fabric which is very flammable the only way to know is when you take it to a seamstress
  • Knock offs are so sketchy, but I can't lie, I'm really curious. Can you post some regular pictures? YouTube is blocked on my work computer. Laaame!

  • The top obviously doesn't fit but you already know that lol. I don't think it looks like the original picture but hey if you love it that's all that matters!

I would say the dress actually doesn't look too bad for the price.  As for the fit, however, I have to warn you that I had a sheath dress I bought for work that was too big just like that on the top and in the bust.  I brought it to a seamstress and she said it wasn't just a matter of making the straps shorter, but that it would really involve a re-cut of the entire dress to make it fit properly.  Needless to say, I returned the dress.  I would be interested to hear what your seamstress tells you after you show her the dress and how much she quotes you for alterations.

ETA: You could have gotten something like this from David's Bridal for $199 and been able to try on/order in a size that fits to begin with and avoid alterations: http://www.davidsbridal.com/Product_Tea-Length-Strapless-Tulle-Gown-with-Floral-Sash-PK3367_Bridal-Gowns-Shop-By-Silhouette-Short

I think it needs a crinoline or petticoat underneath it to make it look more like the picture.  OP, I would consider adding one prior to getting it hemmed.

  • I agree with everyone else. I think you might end up spending quite a bit on alterations. That top is huge.  I don't think it's a matter of taking it in an inch. They might have to recut that whole top.  Taking it in will screw up the V in the back.    You said in the video that you know two great tailors, so maybe they'll cut you a deal on remaking the top of the dress.

I don't think it looks exactly like the dress in the picture, but this is certainly not the worst knockoff I've seen, but I still think you probably could have had that made or purchased locally cheaper than what you paid for the knockoff plus alterations.

  • I think it looks nice! I like the style. Are you petite? I often have that problem in the shoulders/chest with dresses\shirts. Nothing that can't be fixed.

What I would ask is about tacking the sash to the seam at the drop waist. I feel like its awkward being up off the seam.

    Good luck!
