How did you ask your bridesmaids?

I'm still a little far off on asking my bridesmaids to be in the wedding, but I have a good idea of who I want to ask.  I was just wondering if anyone did anything special to ask your girls to be BM's or did you just come out and ask them?

I meant to do something special, but time got away from me and I just blurted it out. For FSIL I had FI ask b/c I barely know her. What I had in mind was inviting them to lunch and giving them a "will you be my bridesmaid?" card. I'm pretty sure they have them at Broadway Paper, or you can find designs online.

If my BM's had been local, I would have taken them to lunch or out for coffee, but since none of them were local, I made a phone call.  IMO it's more personal that way (and more my style) than stressing out and trying to hard to come up with some cheesy thing.  If you are close to them and it's not a financial hardship on them, they will be there for you and won't expect something over the top. If you want to do something super special, why not save it for afterward with finding a fun/meaningful way to say thank you?  Just a thought.

I bought blank cards and wrote out personal notes to each BM.

My bridemaids aren't local either. So I just called them up and asked. I have been a BM in several weddings, and my friends did the same thing.
