dress shopping etiquette

I am headed out dress shopping in a few days.  Is it proper to tip your consultant?  Is it dependent on whether or not you purchase a dress?  If so, how much?  I've never heard this issue mentioned (maybe it's just assumed that everyone knows) and I want to do the right thing.  Thanks!

I have never heard of someone tipping their consultant. It's not something that is done - even if you end up buying a dress. What some people do is send a thank you card to the store thanking them for a great experience.

I have never heard of tipping the consultant.  As @hlvonb mentioned, a thank you with a picture in your dress on your wedding day is nice.  The store/consultants seemed to appreciate it at the shop where I got my dress.  They posted them all up on boards in the dressing rooms and out by the front counter.
  • My consultant actually received commission off my dress purchase. I also left a lovely review on their website for the fabulous experience I had with her. I have never heard of tipping the consultant.

  • Consultant is wedding industry speak for sales clerk.  You wouldn't tip a sales clerk at a department store, would you?  I do realize that the days of sales service are gone now, but I can remember being waited upon when I was looking for a dress, way back when.
No.  You do not tip them.  You can recommend them to your friends.

  • Thanks for all the good advice!
  • The store that I went to try on dresses, and ended up buying from, did not give the sales consultants commission. I loved my consultant and really enjoyed my experience. She actually picked the dress out I ended up buying. We did tip her just to show our thanks and then sent a card later. It is not required but if you enjoy the experience and thye don't receive commission, it may be a nice gesture.
