What does your mother have in mind?  A gown?  A suit?  A cocktail dress?  Is she a plus size?  We need more to go on here.

My mom sewed her dress for my wedding and bought her two dresses for my two sisters' weddings at David's Bridal.

I shopped at the major department stores, but specifically steered clear of the bridal departments.  I looked at cocktail dresses at Nordstrom, Macy's, Neiman Marcus, Lord & Taylor, and White House Black Market.

I found my dress online at Nordstrom.  I actually ordered 3 from the website (which has so much more than you can find at the stores).  They have an outstanding return policy, and what you have shipped to the house you can return via their brick and mortar store.

I lean toward less embellished, tailored, and structured dresses.  If your mom prefers that style, suggest she look at Tadashi Shoji, Lauren, or Calvin Klein.  Adrianna Papell and Maggy London are other strong lines with some appropriate MOB looks.

This question is asked frequently, OP.  A quick search would have garnered you multiple threads with lots of suggestions......here is the most recent....

We looked everywhere for my mom - Bridal Shops, major department stores, local stores. We even drove to a different state to shop because she could not find anything she liked. It really depends on what you're looking for.

My mom wanted a cocktail dress. She found one at Macy's, but we also looked at Coldwater Creek, J. Crew, Talbots, Ann Taylor and Nordstrom.

Nordstrom has amazing dresses, and so does Lord and Taylor. You can try to find them at a bridal shop, but I think their dresses are much more expensive and the quality is not as good as a department dress. Macy's is okay, but it did not work for my mother.  My mother has a disability so it made it 10 times harder to find a dress that looked nice on her.  In the end, we got a dress from a bridal shop, but I ordered it from a store called French Novelty.  Still worried about her dress (if it is the right size), and my ease will not be put to rest until I know the dress fits her.

My mother is plus size and I'm not really certain on what type of attire she prefers. I would think it would be a dress....

my mom is currently searching (also plus sized) and has found some she likes at Nordstrom.com .  they are free shipping and returns.  She checked out Macy's but the selection wasn't great.

My mother wore a dress from Lord & Taylor at my wedding and a dress from Barney's at my sister's.  Both were long evening gowns, she looked beautiful.  Neither had that terrible bolero or whatever you call the matching vest thing, she didn't want anything that screamed MOB.

If mom is plus sized, look into Lane Bryant as well, they have some very lovely dresses on their website.  Just check the return policy prior to purchasing.

My mom is plus sized and found her dress at Dillard's. We went to one "special occasion" shop and the woman there was so rude, made my mom feel so self conscious, and expected us to order a $400 dress that she couldn't try on first, had no guarantee it would fit or look good, and wasn't returnable. Eff that. I marched my mom out of there and we went to Dillard's. Her dress looked awesome on her.

Perhaps not all bridal and special occasion stores are like that, but that left such a bad taste in my mouth. Not many carry a very nice plus size variety anyway. We stick to department stores now.

I have ordered plus size dresses from One Stop Plus and I have been pleased with their selection.
