I'm on a very tight budget and my friends mom offered to let me have her dress and alter it however I want. She's smaller than me and the dress was not preserved so its got yellowing. Does anyone know of anywhere I can take it in south jersey to have it cleaned and tailored to fit me and my style? Somewhere that is good but won't break the bank?

  • Try posting this on your local wedding board (drop down menu on the right). This board is international.

  • Have you seen the show Something Borrowed Something New?  They redo hand-me-down dresses all the time.  I am afraid, though, that the 'new' dresses usually look a heck of a lot better and I am not sure you will be able to get the yellow out.

  • you also run the risk of it not holding up its shape after not being preserved. it has yellowing but are the fibers on the dress still good what kind of fabric is it do you have pictures you can post up.

i would find a place localy that can assess the dress to see if anything can be done.

also what is your budget that you can spend on a dress?

bridal consigments most have sample dresses in sizes 0-30 of discontiunued dresses that designers no longer produce. prices range from 200 up to 1000 for the more couture gowns.

also call up some salons and ask them do you have any discontinue dresses or sale dresses in this price range most will have dresses and some might work with you on price
  • If you had to buy a dress what would be your budget?

  • Also, how small is the dress? Most clothing can only be let out a little bit.

Keep in mind that if you decide to buy a new dress, many bridesmaids dresses come in white or ivory, and they're quite affordable ($50-$200).
  • As for tailoring.  Look into Attenzione by Ceil in Haddonfield.  She can do magic with dresses.  She should also be able to tell you if the dress you have will be able to be altered to fit you.  I'm sure she can also recommend a cleaners that help with the yellowing.

I had my dress cleaned at Kings Guard Cleaners in Haddonfield and it came out great, but I also had no yellowing.
