My gown came in...really early

I purchased my gown back in the end of October.  I got a call yesterday from the shop telling me my gown came in, originally they had told me that it would come in in April.  My wedding is August 2nd. I'm not sure when I should start scheduling my fittings.  I plan to lose about 5 pounds before the wedding, nothing major, just figure might as well tone up a bit for the big day!

Should I go try it on now? But not have them wait to start the alterations until closer to the actual date.

Re: My gown came in...really early

  • As long as the store is willing to store it for you, there is no need to rush into alterations.

My daughter's dress came in early as well.  She went to see it to make sure the order was correct, and used it as an opportunity to invite her MIL to see it as well.  She did not begin alterations until about 2 months prior to the wedding.  You also want to make sure you have the shoes you plan on wearing when you go in for alterations so they can hem it to that heel height.
  • I felt better having mine at home.  I ordered it in October and my wedding isn't until this October.  I picked it up last week and it is currently hanging in the spare room closet of my house until I take it in for alterations.
  • @LDay2014 I've read that you should store your gown horizontally so that the weight of the skirt will not stretch the rest of the dress over time as it hangs in the closet. Hanging for a couple days is no big deal, but for that length of time you might notice it makes a difference! Just wanted to let you know in case it messes with the shape of the gown.
  • Ok, I will give them a call so I can go in and just make sure everything is ok.  Then schedule my fittings a few months before my wedding.  When I ordered I made sure that they would store it up until the wedding.
    Thanks
  • My wedding is August 2nd as well (yay date twins!). I bought my gown at a local consignment shop in November and since I live with FI she offered to hold the gown for me and told me I should plan on May for my first fitting.

If it will make you feel better to go in and try it on again I think that would be perfectly fine if they have already agreed to hold it for you but I would say May-ish is probably best to start fittings. I too want to get in a little better shape which will matter when it comes to getting my dress to fit perfectly (it's already one size too big) so I don't want to go too far out.
  • They generally say to do first fitting for alterations about 2 months before the wedding.  My dress also came in 2 months earlier than expected.  I do plan to go pick it up and try it on, to make sure that everything is okay with it and they actually got the right dress in. Then my FMIL offered to let me keep it at her house... I'm worried that FI will snoop if I keep it at mine.  That way I can have it available to try on accessories with it.  I am finding it hard to choose jewelry and accessories when I can't see what they look like with the dress.

  • This is me. I ordered my dress last month and I just picked it up today. I went ahead and booked my appointment to get my bustle done on the dress. They told me to do it 2 months in advance before the wedding but I'm going to double check to see if I need alterations. I was told I didn't need it but you never know.
  • my dress came in early and the store had me go in just to try it on, make sure everything was okay.  They are storing it and i am suppose to go back about 6 weeks before the wedding for the first fitting
  • I had my dress a year early. For my March 24th wedding, my first fitting was January 19th, and it had to be taken in twice b/c I kept losing weight.
What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14
