Having a dress made..

Hey Knotties!

so my FI and were talking about our budget and such and since our wedding isnt for 2 years i am in no rush for a dress.. but I was starting to think.. have any of you had a dress made? I am thinking of taking my moms old dress (she was a double 0 and i am NOT) haha but take her dress and use the fabric for a dress! I live down in the DC NOVA area but we will be getting married in NY.. if anyone knows anything about going about this your wisdom is very welcomed here!

thanks!!!

Re: Having a dress made..

  • I was going to go this route. I met with a dressmaker and discussed everything with her. In the end I decided to make it myself with my grandma.

You should go try on dresses to get an idea of what you want and more importantly what looks good you. Make an appointment with a few people to see how you like them and see if they can create what you are looking for. Using your mom's dress I'd suggest bringing it to those appointments along with inspiration dress pics.

I don't know what your budget is but having a dress can be expensive. Not that it matters, just want to make sure you are prepared for that.

It's early but it's a good idea to start looking into your options now.
  • some things to think about and research

what kind of fabric was your moms dress? silk fabric can deteriorate after years and not be workable to make a dress out of

    was it preserved properly?

how much fabric is on the dress enough to make a new dress for you? or would you need extra fabric? finding fabric to match the old might be tricky if its got lots of details.

are there any bridal dress makers near you  i am in connecticut and we have a place about 30 minutes from me she has samples of what she has made before you can have her make one of those or she can make from scratch to what you are looking for.  so maybe google bridal dress seamstresses or bridal dress designers in dc

try on some dress styles to see what you like and what looks good on you  then bring those pictures to the dressmaker to see what she says.

you may love the idea now but may end up falling in love with  a new dress from a bridal salon,
