Puerto Aventuras, Riviera Maya

So this isn't about a honeymoon, but I figured this would be the best board to post this on.  My BF and I just booked a trip to Catalonia Riviera Maya, an all inclusive resort, for the end of June.  Has anyone been there, or somewhere near?  Do you think we should rent a car?  What are some things you recommend we do or see?  We're there for 5 entire days (not including flying in and out) so I'm hoping that's enough time to relax on the beach and get out and see some of the culture.

Thanks!

  • Don't bother renting. Anything you want to do you can book through the hotel.

  • I went there a couple of years ago.  It was ok....I wasn't really impressed by the place.  We didn't choose this place, a group we went with did.  I remember the beach being small and not level with the water.....there were steps to go down if you wanted to go from your chair into the water.  The food was ok, nothing wonderful, but nothing horrible.

I also remember one thing we did was pay extra to upgrade at check-in (I think from standard room to deluxe).  I'm so glad we did.  I think the resort is divided in half, and the room on the side we stayed was much nicer than those of the people we went with.  Highly recommend.

We travel all over and wouldn't go back here..... not because of anything terribly wrong with this place though...I just think there are far better places in Mexico.

  • Thanks ladies!  @JoanE2012, did you go before the renovation?  I think I read that they recently renovated it, so maybe it's better now?  I'm just hoping we at least get what we paid for, as far as quality goes, because we didn't want to spend a lot of money so I know we're not gonna get 5 star service and food, but hopefully its decent!

  • @sbehbaha - I'm not sure if we were there before or after renovations.  I'm assuming before?  It was 2 years ago this month.  I looked around online and found a map.  I'm pretty sure we were in building 5 in front of building B at the top of the map.  It was away from the pool (and noise!), but I think those rooms in that area are the upgraded rooms.  HIGHLY recommend.  Our friends didn't upgrade and were in building 5 at the bottom of the map.  Definitely not as nice (though perhaps that's changed if they renovated), and seemed more like they were off the beaten path.
  • Thanks! We will try to upgrade when we check in!
