I did hot yoga for the first time last night.

And it was awesome! If you haven't tried it yet, I definitely recommend it. I was really scared of getting overheated but I did just fine. FI came with me too and he loved it as well.
Bonus - my skin feels amazing today. I don't know 100% if it's related, but I see a serious improvement from my blah gross winter skin.

  • I would LOVE to do hot yoga! Only problem is that I can't find anywhere around me that has classes during hours that I'm not at work :/ Glad you had a good experience!

I just started a Groupon for Bikram yoga.. had my 4th class last night.  It's incredible how red my face gets, I'm pretty sure the instructor turned down the air (as in, made it colder) for us purely based on my face.  LOL.. but, I burned 785 calories which is crazy.  And you're right about the skin, it's great!
  • Um..... I hated it!

I tried a free beginners class, and apparently there were more experienced people (taking advantage of "free") in there expecting to be zen masters. I had a hard time following some of the instructions and people were less than helpful.  I was NOT zen when that was over.

  • Did you do bikram? I love hot yoga, I always feel amazing after.

I am a big fan of doing bikram when I was hungover. I would sweat out all the booze, take a nap afterwards and then feel like a million bucks.

My only problem with it is you have to commit at least 2 hours to it, which is hard to fit in my schedule.

That sucks that you had a bad experience! I've taken many yoga classes before and the instructor always says to just do what you can. They also say if there are any poses you can't do, it's OK - either do the modifications or just sit.
  • I loved hot yoga! I used to go when I lived in the bay area, but there are not any classes where I am living now that are at a time I can go.  I hate that they are all at 10am!!  Hello, people work!  I am hoping that soon changes or they add a weekend class because I would love to do it again. I always had the best energy burst when it was over.

  • The first time I tried it, I almost vomited.  But I tried it again, and loved it!

    I've stopped because:
    a) It is not in my budget
    b) It chafes my trousers that someone attempted to copyright yoga poses, just because they are being done in heat.  (Pretty sure the court was all, "Unless you are several thousands of years old, you cannot copyright yoga, bro.")

  • Glad you had a good time! I'm scared to do it because I am worried I will get sweaty, slip on the mat, and fall and embarrass and/or injure myself in front of all the zen yogi's.

I sweat like crazy in regular non-heated yoga! I bring a pool-sized towel and put it on top of my mat and it helps me not to slip.

It's hard but you should try as hard as you can not to compare yourself to others in class. What I mean is that part of the point is to let go of how perfect or not perfect you are at doing it and allow it to be a positive thing for your body and spirit.
