We call my dog goose. Well, Raider is in his mouthing chewy stage and decided to be a beast and grabbed a sock from my hamper - and despite chasing and trying to get the sock, he swallowed it before my very eyes.

12 pounds swallowed a no-show ankle sock! He swallowed my thong a couple months ago (sorry TMI) and it surprised us when we found it on his potty pad.. I never knew he swallowed it. I'm praying he'll pass the sock just like he did the thong... But I'm SO SO worried..

I'm at work all day today 6:30 am to 7:30 pm and ive had to leave him all alone..

Need some hugs and prayers that he'll be okay. Please for my sanity don't share any horror stories about dogs swallowing things.. I've googled and have an incredibly paranoid fear for him now :(

My little 9 month old baby has found such a place in my heart - I don't know what to do.

UPDATE 5/26: Very Gross, sorry. Dog vomit.

Raider ate my sisters thong yesterday (the siblings are not used to having a goat in the house). I thought it would pass like the previous thong did.

I had thought the sock was never actually swallowed, either.

We had a LONG morning. Raider was throwing up every 45 minutes - I'd get up and clean him up and then he'd jump back on the bed and curl up and sleep. From 4 am to 8 am. The last time, he threw up consecutively three times in a row and it was like he was throwing up his insides - poor baby! Well what came up in the dark? The noticeable blue thing, and a very odd shaped item covered in who knows what. I'm like, is that a penis? I got gloves and put them in the sink - my orange sock!!!

I cannot believe that sock was in his tummy for that amount of time! I guess it never passed into his small intestine. Thank goodness for eating the underwear yesterday - it got everything bad out!

Yay puppy dog lol. I feel VERY productive this morning already.

Apologies for the grossness.

  • Hugs and positive thoughts to you and your little goose!! Keep us posted.

  • He'll probably be fine, but if he stops going to the bathroom or there's blood, then I would take him to the vet.
  • I'm sure your little guy will be ok. Sending positive thoughts your way.
  • I agree with PP. If he starts to get bloated or acts like he's uncomfortable, and if he doesn't go to the bathroom for a while, you should take him to an animal hospital or the vet.

I know from experience that 12 lbs isn't very big, but he should be okay. Just keep an eye on him!

  • Sending prayers your way!  I'm sure your pup will be fine.

I can't tell you everything my two dogs (beagles) have swallowed that they shouldn't, but among them are a chicken bone (which I tried to fish out of her mouth as she bit down on it, breaking the end of my index finger and giving me deep puncture wounds), a lightbulb, the underwire from a bra, reeses cups, mascara tube, the styrofoam beads in a pillow, nail polish, etc.  They're both three now and still surprise me with what they eat and are still perfectly healthy.

  • Lots of prayers and positive thoughts. My friend's dog has eaten several socks (long men's tube socks) in his lifetime and passed them all, I'm sure your little guy will be fine!

  • Holy crap, this topic is giving me the heebie-jeebies. LIGHTBULBS?! Oh god. I'm never getting a dog. I can't handle the stress.

Many many hugs and tummy rubs for the little pooper.

Hahaha half of those incidents are actually my FI's fault.  The lightbulb he somehow knocked out of its base and broke when he was trying to kill a fly.  It was one from our dining room chandelier type light.  He couldn't find it on the floor and didn't think to tell me.  The next day my dog came up to me and crunched down on something.  A few glass pieces came out of her mouth and FI goes "oh that must be the lightbulb I broke!"  Um...what?  The chicken bones he left in the top of our trash can, uncovered.

  • He should be ok as long as he didn't shred it. Keep an eye on him for a few days. I know it can be expensive, but if worst comes to worst, take him to the vet and they can put him under and open him up and take it out. Seen it done once.Six month old puppy ingested a shredded towel. He was fine after the doctor opened his stomach and ran his intestines :) ..I know TMI.

  • Thanks everyone for your positive thoughts - just got home from work and the little beast is jumping all over the place excited and scarfed down dinner and left me lots of little poopies - just no sock. Took him on a walk and he seems to be acting fine still

I don't know when to expect the sock if it passes?

@smalfrie19 I wish I could afford to get him surgery! The vet told me it's a 6 grand surgery... I mean I have an emergency fund.. but it's not THAT big... So that's why I'm so scared. But if he does start acting fatigued, not drinking, not pooping, I'm definitely bringing him to see what they can do for my little baby.

  • If worst comes to worst and he has to have surgery, I'd ask your vet if you can set up a payment plan for it. Most vets in my area would be willing to work with you for that.
  • @Sugargirl1019, have you looked into pet insurance? It's pretty affordable (I think my mom pays like $15/month) and it covers emergency surgeries and all of that stuff. It's fantastic for those out-of-the-blue random emergency situations.
  • @keptinstitches Good plan - thanks for mentioning. I hope that would be an option.

Right now he is doing "mad dog" and running across my bed, jumping down and running under the bed, then jumping back up and running across the bed - all while growling. Guess he's feeling okay if he wants to run around like that!

  • UPDATE:

Raiders poopies had been pretty normal up until now. This one was just very very very soft (and stinky) but not like water. He normally has little tootsie rolls, but this one was a.... mound. Sorry for the TMI.

Behavior is still the same. Before this, our vet encouraged the wait and see approach. I'm worried all over again.

  • My parents' lab when she was a puppy ate a whole leather work glove and passed it no problem.  If he's still having bowel movements, that's a good sign.  It's probably soft because the sock's trying to make a reappearance.  It should be soon now.
  • Thanks. I really really hope it's going to appear soon! Every couple of hours I pat his tummy and say "Where's my sock? You working on my sock?" I'm monitoring his BMs like crazy (that's the nurse in me!).

    ANOTHER UPDATE:

Today I was at work, and FI texts me that Raider threw up. He had some lovely loose gross poopies this morning, so I called an after hours vet clinic with my concerns. They were very concerned and asked to see him immediately (and gave me the price breakdown of the plan). So I ran from work 30 minutes early (oops) to meet FI at the vet with the goose.

They did an x-ray and he was SO well behaved! Proud mommy! The vet came in and examined him, asked us to describe the symptoms, and then proceeded to pull up his x-ray. She pointed and showed everything and said, "I don't see any diffuse pockets of gas (or whatever) that would indicate theres a foreign object blocking. I also really don't see any thing anywhere. Clinically, he's eating, drinking, and pottying like normal." *cue Raiders pottying circle dance*

So they put down a potty pad (he's potty pad trained) and he left a nice little specimen right there for the vet on the pad! *proud mommy* and she said that the consistency was considered normal and does not worry her.

She told us of puppies that have come in with a foreign object obstruction, and said that the dog will not move, not drink, not eat, and will cry when you touch their stomach. Raider has been licking everyone excessively and wagging his tail and being super adorable.

So.. there was no emergency today! I don't know where that sock is, but it's not causing any problems right now! (they can't tell that there's something foreign in there?) They anted to do a barium study to see where the sock was, but we passed on that since he's still behaving normally.Another day, vet bills! Yay raider being okay today :)

  • I've seen it go both ways. My Fi's dog can seemingly eat anything and be fine. I've also had a friend who had to have emergency surgery to save her dog who ate an entire dish towel.

Fi's dog, Penny, is a 23 lb Corgi/Pit mix (best guess anyway) and she has eaten drywall (scraping it off with her teeth, not full on hole-in-the-wall), rope, several dog toys we didn't know we had (we try very hard to monitor her with toys), a tennis ball, some plastic packaging bits,  fabric from my crafts, and, the one that takes the cake, a pair of leather rock climbing shoes.

Fi used to go rock climbing and had a very nice pair of purple leather rock climbing shoes. He wears a size 13 shoe. He came home, she had gotten loose and into the closet. His shoes were a mangled mess of sole and that's it. Most of the shoes and the leather were gone. Four or five days later she pooped out a giant string of purple leather and continued to do so for another day. It's been two years since she did that and she's mellowed a lot since then. The rope (a whole section of a dog toy) came out in a similar fashion.

I'm very glad that your dog seems to be acting normal. We take this approach with Penny when she eats things. She almost always gets clogged up or runny for a day or two then passes it without incident. I'm glad only one of our three dogs feels the need to eat everything she can.

  • Wow, poor baby!!!  Glad he got everything out.  Hope he's feeling better now.

"I'm not a rude bitch.  I'm ten rude bitches in a large coat."

  • He has very heavy eyes and keeps closing them and setting his head down while laying in my lap. Poor baby didn't get to sleep at all! (Neither did mommy, for that matter).

And mommy gets to drive 3 hours away and back for a wedding tonight. Yayyyyyy

So glad he's doing better though - I would not leave him and FI could go to the wedding by himself if Raider was still sick.
