What were your must have drinks?

In comparing bar options several got extra points for having certain drinks.

In the end with our venue we got all of the must have/nice to have drinks we wanted including: Captain Morgan, amaretto, Penn Pilsner beer, and for the 3 kids invited to the wedding Shirley Temples.

What were/are the drinks/liquors you really want to have available?

Re: What were your must have drinks?

  • At our wedding, having a good vodka (for H) and Yuengling (my favorite beer) were priorities. Also, rum, gin, and whiskey because I know a lot of people prefer those at weddings. We got married at a winery so there was plenty of wine available and not something we had to worry about.

When I'm a guest at a wedding, I drink either white wine or beer, depending on the selection.

  • We are (well, my husband is), as are a lot of our friends, craft beer or better beer drinkers.  We tried really hard to make sure we had a good selection, that wasn't too beer snobby but would also please the Bud crowd.  So we had Guinness, Yuengling, Hoogarten, Sam Adams, Sierra Nevada IPA, Killian's, home brew brown ale and home brew hard cider.  We could have gone a lot higher end on the beers, but as we were doing kegs, this was all good middle of the road stuff that also wouldn't cost a small fortune to get enough of.

We also tried to find a good midway point for our liquor - more top shelf for the more popular and mid-shelf for the less popular.

I think if you know your crowd and what a the majority drinking habits are you can make sure you have something for all tastes.

  • We had a full open bar, but we did have to make one special request to have our venue add Fireball Whiskey! That's pretty much what all of our friends drink, so we definitely wanted it.
  • We have a limited but fully hosted bar (we get to supply the alcohol through a liquor store, so the pricing is great). We have 4 beers (Yeungling, Guinness, Guinness Black Lager, and Coors Light), 4 wines (merlot, pinot grigio, chardonnay, white zin),whiskey mead, vodka, gin, rum, Scotch, Irish Whiskey, bourbon, vermouth for martinis, and tequila. We're debating whether we should add anything else on there, but I think we're find since most of our friends primarily drink wine and beer. We have an order with an insane quantity of everything (like, 100 bottles of each type of beer), so I think we're covered. The most important thing for us was being able to have mead for our wedding toast. Not everyone loves it, but hey, not everyone loves champagne either. FI and I decided that we weren't going to serve something we ourselves wouldn't drink, so it's mead for everyone!

  • @Cookie Pusher - my husband and I love mead.  He makes his own.  We're still waiting for the chocolate cherry to finish aging before we crack a bottle.

  • Troeg's Nugget Nectar beer. It's a seasonal beer from our favorite brewery. As soon as it was available, we drove out and picked up four cases. We supplied our own bar, so we also got a few other microbrews, including one from my home state, and fixings for dark n stormies (dark rum and ginger beer). And I tasked my wino parents with choosing some really tasty wines. Good booze was actually one of our top priorities, behind only photography and food.
  • @emmyg65 FI and I LOVE Troeg's Nugget Nectar!
  • We have a full open bar, but we added to our contract that we get to choose two additional craft beers.  Haven't decided which ones yet: probably an IPA and maybe a sour beer, my favorite.

That is us to a tee.

As a guest I drink wine, champagne or beer.  DH pretty much only drinks vodka and club soda.  We have never attended a wedding that didn't have these basics.

As a host we feel the need to provide everything.  Even our home is stocked with alcohol meant for others and not ourselves.   One reason we picked a place that allowed us to bring in out own alcohol.   Now we might not have had everyone's favorite brands, but we did have vodkas, gin, whiskey, amaretto, tequila, different beers and wines among other things.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.

Yum. I need to make friends with you and your FI! We found a vineyard not far from us that makes a mead that is fermented in whiskey barrels. It's a bit strong (16%+ ABV), but we love the taste of it. We're ordering enough to have for the toast and to take home for our "honey moon"!

  • That sounds fabulous.  He has 3 barrels that he's gotten from various places that he ages some of his cider and beer in, but he hasn't done it with the mead yet.

Right now he's got 2 that were bourbon (maybe rum, I forget which) that had maple syrup aged in them after the bourbon. I'm not sure if he's started anything in them yet (I can't keep up with all his brewing sometimes), but whatever goes into them will be tasty.

He made a rum barrel aged hard cider that took bronze at a cider competition, so he must be doing something right. :)

  • I'm drooling over here (and in desperate need of a drink lol)! Don't be surprised if I randomly show up at your door one day looking for a drink! haha

  • I am going to have to try some of these beers, specifically Nugget Nectar.

Cookie - Guinness Black really impressed me the first time I tried it.

  • I love lagers, and I really love Guinness. I wasn't sure how I'd feel about Guinness Black Lager, but man, it blew me away. I really wanted to serve Guinness Foreign Extra at the wedding, but it's harder to find AND much more expensive (4 packs cost more than 6 packs). Oh well, guess I'll just have to have some at home for after the wedding! :)

  • We are having a full open bar, but we get to add a signature cocktail (maybe 2, I can't remember). My must have would be tequila, so some kind of margarita type cocktail.

  • I would say some good vodka, gin, and some good rum.  Definitely some beer and red and white wines.  I asked my venue to make available Moscatto I know my mom, sister and several of my friends love that kind of wine.

I really need a drink today.

I love Yuengling! I lived in Ohio for a while and fell in love with it. I wish I could get it here!

  • We only had a choice of 2 wines (a red and a white).

But, on our beer selection we had:
Stella Artois (my husband's favorite beer)
    Dos Equis
    Shiner Bock
  • My FI is insisting in having an absinthe cocktail. I think we are the only two who will drink it but it is something he wants so we're going to have it. Other than that we're just going to have wine and beer. We're thinking about buying a bottle of whiskey for FBIL since he is the only one who will drink it. Actually we're kind of lucking out on the alcohol because the majority of my family doesn't drink so we know that unless our friends get shitfaced, or all three members of his family grow gills and need to swim in it to survive there is no chance of us running out of anything.
  • We're getting married at a winery so we'll have 7 different kinds of their wine available (mix of red and white - in particular Riesling and Pinot Noir). We're also bringing in a keg of an amber ale from a local brewery in our town that should be pretty palate pleasing to everyone. Our venue doesn't allow any liquor and we're fine with that. Neither of us are big liquor drinkers (FI was until his corn allergy overrode his love of whiskey) and I can only think of maybe a handful out of 65 people that would want it there.

Trashy white wine, and classy red wines, also, my signature cocktail is a Cosmopolitan made with Pear Grey Goose.  It is so different and amazing.  Fi will have quite a few beers to please the guys (and some girls), even though I am not a beer drinker, myself.

Generally, only American whiskey is made with corn; Irish & Scotch are not.  He doesn't have to give up whiskey.
