NWR: one frustration and plenty of excitement

Frustration:
I'm TAing a lab for undergraduates, where there happens to be a grad student in my lab. I have lab from 3-6pm and 6-9pm where students are required to attend their section. Miss grad student didn't show up at 3-6pm. She showed up at 7:30 and wanted me to stay late so she could finish the lab. First of all fuck-no. I'm exhausted by 9pm. Wednesdays are rough for me. And she lied to me about why she was late. She told me she went to another classes office hours (not an excuse anyways). In fact, she was at a graduate school social event (which I'm bummed I missed) and saw the fucking professor of the class there and then had the nerve to lie to me. I talk to the professor a lot because he is extremely hands on. Now he is pissed at her and I'm pissed at her and this won't bode well for her getting the benefit of the doubt on any curve.

And finally, she didn't know how to use any of the equipment. She is a graduate student. Anyone in electrical engineering knows how to use a voltmeter by the end of freshman year. So while I somewhat assisted the other students, who had a handle on the basics of the equipment, I had to start from scratch on stuff she should have learned 5-6 years ago in undergrad.

I am clearly exhausted and just pissy right now.

But in good news, I get to see one of my close friends from undergraduate tomorrow. I'm visiting my grandparents for the weekend, because they are all pretty much not doing well. I have to fly into a town 2 hours away, where this friend and his wonderful girlfriend live. So I get to take them out to dinner and catch up. It has been a year since I've seen him and I'm super excited!!!!!! Especially since he doesn't have social media, so we text occasionally, but I haven't talked to him much lately. :)

Super shady. And I was super grumpy about it yesterday. But the professor knows and that is all I can do.

That is so exciting I hope you have fun! :) Where are you guys going?

  • Sorry to hear about the shady grad student, but yay for visiting friends and family!  I'm sure it will mean a lot to your grandparents that you are coming to see them.

I am 100% entirely with you oh my god.

I'm also a grad student who has to teach labs/discussions. Since I've taught intro bio labs, we have lots of pre-meds, and that includes people who've already gotten their bachelor's degree and are just doing their pre-med requirements. Usually, those people are more responsible than the undergrads, but sometimes ....

I feel you. I TA'd a graduate course last quarter and the excuses people have amaze me.

Best excuse this quarter: We have 4 lab sections. I teach two on Wed which aren't full because I split the section into two. There are 2 other sections that are full. More room can be made, but it is a hassle and gets to be more than the TA/prof can handle (prof teaches one lab section). So a student wants to move from my lab to the full Thursday lab because he has a "one-time important event" happening on Wed. I inquire further. He wants to reschedule and cause a hassle for his anniversary with his girlfriend. Nope. Not happening. Wish I would have asked which anniversary. Would have been icing on the cake if he would have said one or two month. I told him he could join the 3-6pm if he wants to, but can't switch into a full lab for a non-excuse.

Where I am at, undergrads tend to be spoiled (it is a trend, not a rule), so I'm looking forward to hearing more excuses. One student almost bought the textbook off of amazon for $1000. They are 40 at the bookstore, but you have to wait until week 2 to get them (my prof provides the first chapter online).
