marriage license question

I know each state is different.. I am from New Jersey. I have a question I have heard ten different things from everybody. Where do I get my marriage license? The town we are getting married in, the town which I live in, or the town I will be living in after I get married. I have called the towns for which I live in and will get married in, and my pastor all said different things.

Re: marriage license question

  • Every state has different rules. In Connecticut you have to get it either in the town you live in or the town you are getting married. In Massachusetts you can get it in any town in the state, no matter where you live or where you're getting married.

I also got married in NJ, but we were not residences of NJ.  We had to go to the county where we are getting married.  If you live in NJ you can go to the county where you reside.

*** got married in 2008 - things might have changed.

ETA - you have to apply up to a full 3 BUSINESS days before your wedding.   Meaning if you are getting married on a Saturday the latest you can apply is the Tuesday before.   I applied for ours in June for a Sept wedding because that was the last time I would be in town before the Wed before the wedding.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • If you live in and are getting married in NJ, you have to apply for your license in the bride's municipality.  Once you're married, your license is then filed in the municipality where you were married.
