NWR: Beauty Questions

Hi ladies, I have really dry skin- always have. I tinker with different lotions and make up and have generally balanced it pretty well. But lately my lips have been so dry they are cracking. Chapstick/lip balm just doesn't seem to do the trick. I sleep with a humidifier, which seems to help somewhat. But my lips are so dry they just hurt.

Any suggestions for really good lip moisturizers?

Re: NWR: Beauty Questions

  • I would recommend slathering some vaseline on your lips when you go to bed.  Since you are sleeping you won't be constantly licking/rubbing your lips together so it gives it time to do its magic.

  • Coconut oil or shea butter.
  • I use aquaphor would my standard Chapstick wont cut it. And drink more water.
    BabyFruit Ticker
  • Nivea Kiss of Smoothness or Kiss of Moisture. Another knottie recommended it to me and it is amazing!

I recommend shea butter too--works wonders. Also I second PP who said drink more water. It can be tough but it will really help!

ETA: Try not to lick your lips (at all!). I don't know if you do this, but if you do- try to consciously stop doing it. Your saliva is part of your digestive system and helps to break down food. It seems counterintuitive, but licking your lips actually breaks down the top skin layers on your lips and can definitely cause irritation, etc.

Drink lots and lots of water! I never have skin problems and I drink a butt ton of water everyday.

My skin starts to dry up right away if I get dehydrated.

I love the rose salve from bath and body works. That stuff is good for everything.

  • Almond or coconut oil. That's what I use. I only use lipbalm when I need spf.
  • I would actually recommend against Vaseline, Aquaphor, Chapstick, or other products with petrolatum or petroleum products in them.  Petrolatum seals the skin, but it doesn't actually penetrate and provide any moisture.  So it's good for an actual cut or bleeding spot to seal it, but it won't solve any long-term dryness issues.

I have a natural lip scrub that is great for when my lips are dry and peeling or cracked.  I think you can make your own with olive oil and salt or brown sugar.  I really like the lip balms from Arbonne and Coola.  Sometimes when my lips are super dry, I will put night cream or straight Argan oil on there.

  • Dermatologists often recommend petrolatum for over dry lips.

Stay away from anything with camphor, phenol, menthol or anything else ending in ol as that is an alcohol and will dry out your lips. Waxes are bad for your lips as well.

The best product I have found is Mary Kay Satin Lips balm. It lasts a long time and really moisturizes your lips.

  • I use Neosporin lip stuff I found at Target. Seriously works like a charm.

  • Bag balm. It comes in a green tin and is awesome!
  • More water is always good but if you haven't had your thyroid checked at a physical recently (or even an obgyn appt) I would do so if it's a chronic, noticeable issue. A year or so before I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer I had really dry and skin and lips and apparently that, among among many other things, could be a symptom of a thyroid problem. It might also just be dry skin, but hey, we all need regular check ups anyhow so you might as well go! Thyroid issues are becoming more and more common in women too.

Thus ends my PSA for the day :)

Aray82 thanks for the tip, I have never heard that before! I am pretty diligent with my doctor visits and my water intake, but that is really good to know. It is also worth mentioning that we are coming off of a VERY rough winter and my apartment has radiant heat, so dryness abounds!
