Monday randoms

-- I tried a new thing I saw on Pinterest (don't judge me) for blow-drying your hair. It worked, and my hair looked good, but about half-way through my morning, up it went into a pony tail and I realised there's a reason I don't more frequently blow-dry my hair.

-- I walked 3 miles yesterday and I felt good while doing it, but my bum is sore today from having done it. I guess that's a good sign?

-- DH is frustrated with a friend of his, M, who was his BM at our wedding and recently moved back to PA after living down South for several years. M always texts DH on Friday or Saturday to ask if he's up for something (those are DH's days off), and DH always says yes, but then M always wants DH to come up with the plan, which usually ends up being drinking at a local bar and watching sports, and you can only do that for so long before it gets both boring and expensive.

-- We are having Drama with DH's BSC grandmother, and I'm not sure how to handle it, or even if I should say anything at all, because I'm just so freaking frustrated at the woman I can't even see straight.

-- After a week of chaos last week, I am having a much-needed slow week this week, and that makes me happy.

-- The meal train thread on E made me hungry, so I made vegetarian lasagna last night and DH is a very happy man this morning.

So what's everyone else's randoms?

Re: Monday randoms

  • We had our food tasting yesterday, which was FANFREAKINGTASTIC, and even convinced tightwad FI that we need to have turkey burger sliders for a late night snack (win!), but today all I have to eat at work is Wheat Thins so I am sad panda.

24 comes back on tonight! Getting less sad.

It's mufuggin cold outside. What the shit, Mother Nature. Moar sad.

    - My boss is out of the office today so I'm a free range laura!

    - FI and I finished all our birthday and mother's/father's day shopping for FILs and my dad. And we got great deals. I feel very accomplished.

    - I'm starting to make plans for my grandma to come visit me here in Atlanta, or for a spur of the moment roadtrip to Missouri to go dress shopping with her over Memorial Day weekend. Reading about @HisGirlFriday13's HM got me thinking about how much I love Charleston, so if Grandma comes here we might make a short trip up to Charleston. I have a favorite airbnb host there and I'm hoping she would have availability on short notice.

    - FI finally got his new HVAC system installed today so I can stop listening to him complain about how hot it is. I do feel bad for him having to shell out $5k and take time off work to get it replaced. But listening to him complain about how "it's 73 degrees and he just can't sleep like this" has been driving me crazy.

    - I really, really need to wash my hair. I can't wash it more than once a week, but I can go up to 2.5 weeks with dry shampoo, and I've kind of lost track of when I washed it last. Judge me as you will.

    - I'm really fed up with the director of a group I volunteer with. I lead a resume writing workshop at a local homeless shelter, and the director is supposed to be in charge of recruiting volunteers and coordinating with the shelter staff, and he's consistently failing to do so. It's getting to the point where we have to turn clients away because we don't have enough volunteers, and I absolutely hate it, but don't know how to address it with the director.

ETA: It's lunch time and I have delicious chicken in the fridge, but all I can think about is cupcakes.

  • @HisGirlFriday13 what was the hair drying trick you saw on Pinterest? I've got naturally wavy/frizzy hair that I blow dry straight every day and I'm always on the lookout for a better way to do so.

    - I am very tired and stressed, but I brought my gym bag with me today. Dieting for 3 weeks hasn't really done all that much, and I'm getting cranky.

    - I accidentally stayed up late last night because I was reading the first two parts of an investigative report that the Boston Globe has done on the Boston rental landscape situation. It's fascinating and, honestly, incredibly upsetting. Basically, because of Boston's number of colleges and universities and large student population, we've managed to dig ourselves into this really terrible situation, where landlords are charging significantly high rent for apartments that are not in livable condition, and then rent to more undergraduates than can (code-wise) live in the apartment. Problems are typically never addressed or fixed, inspections are usually never done, and landlords find ways to avoid paying fines for violating the law. There have been a lot of fires in some of the more student-populated areas, and the deaths and injuries of some students has really jump-started investigation into the subject.

    - I don't have any motivation to work. Oh my god. My apathy has never been this bad.

    - Birdo is finally home after spending almost a week at my future in-laws' house while our building was treated for bugs. He is in a super good mood. It's good to have him home.

    - Still struggling with how to deal with my sister. After talking with my best friend and my partner, as well as reading the helpful advice I've gotten from TK folks, I'm thinking of letting her know that there are no hard feelings, but that her choice has to be final. I'm just not sure how to tell her that I'm not really okay with her not being a bridesmaid but still doing stuff that we reserved for the wedding party.

    - @hisgirlfriday13 UGH this BSC grandmother needs to leave you all alone. I can't believe she exists (ie I know she exists, and am angry that she is crazy). I also get not being sure if you want to talk about it. Sometimes talking about it just makes your blood pressure skyrocket.

    - I am unreasonably excited that we ordered fridge magnets from Amazon. We've been using the same magnet on our fridge for, like, 6 different pieces of paper, and they all keep falling down because the magnet isn't designed to hold up more than one piece of paper. What a weird thing to need!

I have naturally straight, thick hair that's fairly long, so I don't know if this would work for you, but here's the link:

Ugh. Well, BSC granny has been leaving me alone, which is good. And DH has been avoiding her, which has been good for him.

But she's fallen twice now in the last two weeks -- nasty spills that have left lacerations and bruises on her legs. When she fell last week, she laid on the concrete breezeway by her house for an hour before she managed to drag herself over to the door, get inside, drag herself across the kitchen floor, and finally right herself.

She refuses to use her cane OR take her blood pressure medication (she has low blood pressure, ironically. She just induces high blood pressure in everyone else), which is part of the reason she's falling.

She also refuses to wear her LifeAlert necklace tag, despite knowing that she should/needs to. She called DH over the weekend to tell him about all of this -- the falls, being out of her medication, etc. -- and he said, 'Then I think it's time for you to consider having visiting nurses provide in-home care, at least a few hours a week.'

She, of course, rejoined with, 'Why can't you just stop by more often, or spend the night here a few nights a week?'

DH was like, 'If you can't live alone, your options are assisted living or a nursing home. But I will not live with you. Crazy Auntie will not live with you. NO ONE will live with you. So either let us get you in-home aides or we'll start the process for you to go to a home.'

She got all huffy and started crying and guilt-tripping him and he hung up, frustrated. And of course, she'll tell a different version of this story to crazy auntie, and paint me as the bad guy -- 'DH would live here, but HisGirl won't let him!!' -- and crazy auntie will call me to tell me that BSC granny is telling the family I'm a bitch but she, crazy auntie, doesn't believe it.

So, I'm done. It's not my place as an in-law to deal with this, and I do not have the mental capabilities to handle her nicely. I told DH that whatever he and crazy auntie decide to do (they're her POAs), I'll support, and if that means moving Granny to a home, I'll help clean up her house if need be, or I'll help pack her clothes or whatever, but I am offering no opinions on this, I am offering no thoughts on this, I am offering nothing other than moral support on this.'

It just I.N.F.U.R.I.A.T.E.S. me that she's DELIBERATELY not taking her medicine so she'll fall in the hopes she'll get hurt enough DH will move back home with her.

    So, that was my weekend.

Also, in re your magnets; DH and I buy souvenir magnets every where we go, because they're something you always NEED, but you don't think to acquire unless they're souvenirs or something. I didn't even know you could buy them on Amazon!

  • Visiting my maid of honor after work. She's moving away to NJ on Wednesday to start residency. Sad for me but exciting for her and 3 hours away so we'll be able to do weekend visits.

Just gotta make it through this work week then FI and I are off to Vegas!! (not to get married, just a vacation)

Took the day off so I could relax after attending an out of town bachelorette this weekend. Still got up early to drop the puppy off at his grooming appointment. Arrive at vet's office and they tell me the groomer is out because her dad had a heart attack. Okay, no problem, these things happen. Then the receptionist says we called everyone Saturday. Well, no you didn't call me, but that's fine, can I reschedule? She pulls up my account and says "you did speak to someone Saturday, because you rescheduled for June 2nd." Um, no lady...if I spoke to someone, why the hell would I be here at 7:30 for a cancelled appointment? I was polite and just said, no you're mistaken and left. No apologies from the staff, they just basically thought I was a moron and/ or liar. Needless to say, we now have an appointment with a new groomer later this week. I just can't believe she was going to argue that I spoke to them and not apologize at all that I came up there for nothing. Ugh, at least I'm enjoying my day off, basically lounging around and surfing the net! Happy Monday! (where the heck are my paragraphs?!)
  • We're doing our tasting on the 18th and I can't freaking WAIT!

One of the owners created a new position and would like that person to report directly to me. I'm cautiously optimistic.

I am still fah-reaking out over Revenge last night. Does anyone else watch???

@hisgirlfriday13 UGH. That is a whole new level of selfish stupidity. She's going to end up killing herself this way. Like, TAKE YOUR MEDS, use LifeAlert, and if you need care, go to a home or hire someone! EASY DONE I FIXED IT oh wait, I get it, you don't actually WANT to stay healthy and independent ... you just want to guilt everyone. Okay then player.

    GEEZ.

Magnets: I bought THESE. I didn't tell J that there were some cheaper ones because I didn't want cheaper ones. Cheaper ones either had crappy reviews, or they were just the magnet portion, which makes them harder to lift off the magnetic surface.

I found out about my surprise shower this Saturday, nobody asked for my availability for it so they planned on a day I am at all day volunteer fundraiser for the theater I'm involved with, so now I need to readjust my schedule for that.

I have a sink full of dishes I need to load into the dishwasher

I need to spend time on my elliptical tonight I ignored it all last week because of crappy excuses

  • -I can't figure out if I'm getting sick or if my allergies are acting up. It's very annoying that my symptoms for allergies and my symptoms for sinus infection/bronchitus are the exact same.

-Work is boring. I'm wishing I'd just stayed home and hung by the pool again.

-Spent most of Sunday hanging at the pool and somehow I didn't burn! I actually got some nice color! I'm very pale. Usually I burn, but there are rare times I will actually tan.

-I'm wearing my zombie heels at work today. I'm enjoying looking at them.

I like those!! They're pretty! Now I kind of want them....darn you!!

And, yeah, it's like -- 'OK, so you like falling and hurting yourself, is that it?' I also told DH, 'And what happens when she falls and cracks her head open or knocks herself unconscious or breaks a bone and lies there for HOURS because no one knows she's hurt? THEN WHAT?'

I'm just...I'm done. I don't wish her ill, I don't wish her dead, but as I say on here all the fucking time, 'ACTIONS HAVE CONSEQUENCES,' and if her actions are to not take her meds and not be safe, then the consequences are she falls and gets hurt and maybe goes into a home anyway which could have been avoided if she had just been sensible.

Ugh this is why I hate surprises. Whenever J and I watch a TV show or movie where characters try to surprise each other (ESPECIALLY when it's wedding related), I get so irritated. It's always presented as sitcom hijinks, but I just get uncomfortable. That said, I hosted J's surprise 30th birthday, which he said he enjoyed, but I think he was just being nice. We almost gave him a heart attack.

  • - I'm the RSVP contact for my dad's SURPRISE party.   Invites went out last week so they are trickling in.       No need to worry about my dad making other plans.    He already has golf plans with some friends who will be in town.  He thinks everyone (including the wives) are having lunch at his place after golf.   While at golf we all sweep in and set the house up for the party.    In a way he will be cleaning up his house for his own party.  HeHe.

     - speaking of the party.  My a-hole brother just pisses me off.    I KNOW people have lives.  I know people are busy.   But I've been asking since THANKSGIVING for pictures from them of my Dad or my dad with one/all of them.     Nothing.  Not one picture.   I'm working hard making up picture CP for the party.  I'm not just throwing a picture on a stick.  I'm hand cutting them out, matting them, etc.  It's time consuming.    I sent out my last message that today I'm putting in my last picture order.  Nothing.     What really pisses me off is they are drama queens.  They will be mad that they are not in any of the pictures.  History says they will. I know.   Grr.

    -  We are heading to Denver today.  Leaving in a few hours.  Have not packed one thing.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • Fi and I are going to test drive some Mini Coopers today. If all goes well (and if my mom gets me the pink slip to my care sent in a timely manner) I may have a new car this week. Kind of mixed emotions though. I wasn't planning on buying a new car (would still have been a Mini though!) until 2015, after our wedding, but my 2005 Honda Civic just doesn't want to put up with me for that long and is desiring $1800 in repairs. :/

Lunch with an old work friend tomorrow, which I am super excited for because it's been like three weeks since we've seen each other.

This week is the last week of my online classes. I think I missed the registration date for next semester's online classes, but I'm not that upset because I'm kind of over it. But I might try to squeeze into 1.
  •  - I LOVE Cinco de Mayo! I cannot wait for some margaritas after work :)
     - I really need to blow out my hair. Keeping it curly is too much maintenance.
     - I've had meetings all morning. My company had a fashion show (part of our volunteer campaign, a way top promote it. All employees, making fashionable items out of volunteer materials such as old tee shirts, banners. They had a runway, and had some VP's of the company be judges) which I missed because of the meetings :( I made it to the end, and apparently they had a photobooth, so my friend and I took pics.
     - I decided to go vegan for a month. I'm starting out slow this week, and allowing myself to have some meat on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday due to plans that I had already made. On those days, only one meal will have some meat in it.
     - I'm totally unmotivated to do any work right now.

-Was expecting maybe a slight hangover Sunday but instead woke up with sore throat and fever :( Luckily I'm off work until Wednesday :)

-I totally just ate macaroni and cheese for lunch. SO not on my wedding diet, but I'm still partially numb, so I needed something soft and it just hit the spot!!

@jenna8984It's at 117,000 right now. There's a blockage in a head gasket that's causing it to slowly overheat, so they'd have to take it apart to put a new one in.
  • Today I sent my fiance on his 350 mile drive back to school with my vehicle, because him driving his 1999 van with 180,000 miles on it across Nowheresville, Illinois makes me really nervous (especially since 2 of the latest trips required stops at the mechanic). Of course, his car has no a/c, the passenger window won't open, and today it was 85 degrees.

I made some homemade Reese's peanut butter eggs for him on Saturday (planned to Easter weekend, but something came up), and they are absolutely delicious! I actually need to check the fridge and make sure that he took his share of them with him. It will be too dangerous if he forgot them!
  • I feel like Violet Beauregarde (blueberry version) after having drank lots-o-beer at local festival yesterday. Beer = bloat + burps = no fun.

    Our invites shipped today!!

I hate pulling weeds. Might actually hate pulling weeds more than anything else in the whole wide world.

My team is hosting our monthly staff meeting tomorrow morning and we're surprising everyone with a waffle bar. Hopefully that'll help cover the fact we have nothing of significance on the agenda.

  • I very recently chopped most of my hair off, it was really long and now it is just above shoulder length (It kinda looks like Rapunzel's hair after it was cut in Tangled, just a bit longer.)  For the first time in forever I don't have giant, unmanageable knots in my hair that take at least 20 mins to brush out (Rip out would be more accurate).  I literally wake up, run my fingers through it, and it looks awesome.  I thought I'd miss having long hair but I don't at all.

Reading PP's posts reminded me I have a few bottles of hard cider left (I love all apple beverages.  Apple juice, apple cider, alcoholic apple anything, gimme!) and I had totally forgotten I had them so that's awesome.  I love forgetting I have something, and then remembering it later.  It's such a pleasant surprise.

We have a gardening class at work and I am 90% sure my boss and I killed the plants our students planted two weeks ago :( She was out sick for a week and we both forgot to remind each other to water them when she got back.  They were just seeds though, and hadn't sprouted yet, so I'm hoping they were just chilling in the dry soil like they would have in the bag, and might still grow.  If not we'll be rushing to buy seedlings.  Or just message all the parents and be like "This is now digging in the dirt class, we decided we're not qualified to teach kids how to keep a plant alive."

@HisGirlFriday13 does BSC Granny live in the middle of nowhere or something?  If I saw someone sprawled out on the ground I would rush over to ask if they needed help.
    image
  • @doeydo: No, but the way her house sits in her neighbourhood it's hard to see into the breezeway where she fell. And her neighbours are really good at checking on her if she doesn't turn on her outside lights or her main living room window, so they would have found her In another few hours.

It's the larger issue of her being unsteady on her feet and stubborn and a giant PITA.
