Chit Chat

to all my smoothie lovers

I posted a few weeks ago about how I had been sick for like two weeks.  All the blood work came back great, yay!!  Then Monday around midday I got really ill, like puking ill (TMI, I know).

I went home early from work, and bummed on the couch when I wasn't running to the bathroom for a few hours.  That's when I realized that I was feeling quite similar to whenever I have things containing coconut oil.  DH came home with his smoothie cup from the morning and I almost puked again. . . . . that's when I made a connection.  I put a bunch of chia seeds in our morning smoothie!

That's when I decided to do some research online, and a ton of people online have intestinal distress from chai seeds, including flu like symptoms or vomiting. . . . just an FYI if anyone is in the same boat.

Re: to all my smoothie lovers

  • Interesting! Could very well be your culprit.

I only make smoothies with fruit, ice, water. I never do dairy or added protein or whatever.

p.s. my favorite is strawberries, ice, and choc milk :)

I thought you had to do something special with chia seeds, like let them soak until they get all gooey?

Is it an allergy to chia seeds, or do they just cause issues?

    This is good information!

They get kinda gooey in the smoothie.  Apparently you can eat them like a zillion ways, mix them in, sprinkle them on things, who knows.

From what I was old about the coconut oil situation, which I imagine would apply here as well, is that technically it's not a true allergy because my throat doesn't close up or anything.  It's considered an adverse reaction.  All I know is that it sucks!!!
