Chit Chat

This is stupid, and I know it, but...

I had eye surgery recently and my eyes look a little creepy. One eyeball looks red, bloodshot, and bruised, and the other looks like a blood vessel popped. My doctor said it's normal & should go away in a few weeks.

I'm a BM in my best friend's wedding in a week and a half. I'm a little concerned about my eyes in her photos --- not because I'm worried about my appearance for myself, but because I don't want to "ruin" her wedding photos. I look like I am crying True Blood vampire tears. There is nothing I can do about it, but I feel bad & thought you ladies might have some helpful insight.

Maybe the photographer can fix them when they touch the photos up?

  • My friend had Lasik eye surgery, and the first week one of his eyes looked terrible. I was kinda worried for him! By the next week it looked significantly better. Maybe by the time the wedding comes around your eyes will look a lot better - did the doc give you a timeframe? And maybe Visine might help? But as PP mentioned, worst case scenario, I think the photographer can touch that up.

  • I'm sure it will be ok! Maybe just try and rest your eyes so they heal/relax faster. The less pressure the better, I think.

  • Aw.  You are a very sweet friend for worrying about this!  I'm sure your friend is just concerned about your health, not her pictures (unless she is a Bridezilla, of course).

You might be looking a feeling a lot better by the wedding.  And if not, her photog should be able to Photoshop the redness out.

"I'm not a rude bitch.  I'm ten rude bitches in a large coat."

  • Rest your eyes, keep a cold compress on them as much as possible. I'm not a doctor but I think that may help. If your doctor says visine is okay, that also may help.

If it's okay to wear makeup around your eyes, perhaps you can find a tutorial on how to use makeup to make it less noticeable. But there's a good chance it could get to looking better by then.

  • My eyes were definitely torn up after LASIK - with broken blood vessels, etc.  I don't think it took that long for them to heal up though.

  • Eyes heal pretty quickly. Just keep up with your antibiotics and drops. Won't hurt to eat some bananas and maybe drink some tart cherry juice to help with any bruising. I had big bruises that you could notice when I side-eyed people (happens a lot).

My concern, if I were you, would be halos from the flash. I had halos and maaaajor light sensitivity for about 3 months afterward, and it tapered off from there. Make sure you bring sunglasses for when you're done with pictures.

Did you get LASIK or something else? Probably should've asked that before I wrote out that whole long thing lol

  • Aww! I think it's entirely possible that by the time of the wedding, your eyes will look better.

Does this really help? If so - that is great to know.

It's a little bit on the woowoo hippie side of things, but the potassium in bananas allegedly helps heal bruising, and tart cherry juice allegedly helps alleviate inflammation. I've had good results with it but I could be an anomaly. I am not a medical professional so take it as you will. Bananas are good, and I make smoothies with tart cherry juice every morning because it tastes good.

  • I agree with PPs that there's a good chance your eyes will be MUCH better by the time of the wedding, but if they aren't and if you still feel self-conscious, I guess I'd just go with cute sunglasses. It might draw more attention to you, not less, but at least it would be a way to open the door to saying "Oh, I got eye surgery and I'm more comfortable this way" without having people do the gawk-and-double-take. Plus if your eyes are at all sensitive to light at the moment you can just say that if anyone asks.

It's LASIK. Thanks for the tips --- I've definitely been keeping up with the drops the doctor prescribed. I've been cleared to wear eye makeup as of this past weekend, but am refraining from doing so for another week or so in hopes my eyes will heal faster.

My mom says they're looking better, but they still look hideous to me. Maybe (hopefully!) I'll notice a difference in a week.

The sunglasses are a great tip. Here's an idea! I can get one pair of these for every bridesmaid for a great photo opportunity the bride will cherish for YEARS TO COME! (*sarcasm*)

  • My FIL had a wicked case of pink eye at our wedding. For the outdoor photos he wore sunglasses. I feel bad when I look at the photos, not because he "ruined" my pictures, because I know how self conscious he was that day and how unhappy he was while taking photos.

So, if your eye does look like crap that day, try to put it from your mind and rock your blood shot eyes. I notice the discomfort in his face more than his puffy eye.

  • Tell the photographer not to shoot till she sees the whites of your eyes. Seriously though, your eye will improve and no one will notice. Sort of like the BM's shoes.
  • The photographer will likely be removing a lot of camera-induced red-eye anyway; it won't be a problem to remove your physical red eye while they're at it.

Don't stress about it. Just do what your doc tells you, maybe see if a redness-reducing eye drop is ok to use, but you won't ruin anything either way.

This should be something a talented photographer can touch up. I've corrected similar things in my day.

Just wink in all the photos ;)

Photogs don't really have the deal with red eye - nice, expensive, big girl cameras don't have that problem :-D

BUT as I photog, I'd be able to clean your eyeballs easy peasy. Don't worry. They'll fix the best group shots if needed. It'll be fine and not even close to the most difficult that had to photoshop in wedding pics.  :)
    ~xoxo~

  • I've still had plenty of red-eye show up in previews of pro pictures taken of me. I might be a vampire.

  • Pretty sure lot of wine helps every situation, no? Just load up on that and you won't care what you look like! Ha (kidding). But I am sorry about your eyes! I'm sure they will clear up in time.
