NWR: I think we found a house! (UPDATED IN OP)

Some of you know FI and I have been house hunting for what seems like a never-ending 6 months....we currently live in Manhattan and have been looking in the burbs. Since we aren't in a hurry to move, we have been taking our time to find something we truly love. We have looked at probably 40 houses, so we are sufficiently tired of looking! We saw dozens of really, really beautiful 1920s colonial homes and were smitten by the charm that oozed from them. We were both convinced we would end up in one of these charming places.

So what did we do? Put an offer in on a funky 1960s home that needs work. Smart, right? In all seriousness, we realized that with the charm, you end up sacrificing some serious function (no garage, odd nooks and crannies, only 1 bathroom). So we found a place in the world's greatest location (10 minute walk to the commuter train line, smack in the middle of a lovely little town, walk to stores, bars, etc, 1 block from an awesome elementary school, etc). It needs work, but we realized you can add charm, but you can't really add location or function.

So cross your fingers that this is our house!

UPDATE: Sigh. We were outbid. Our realtor called us last night to let us know. But, not all hope is lost yet. We are the 2nd in line. So if the original offer falls through, it comes to us. Keep crossing those fingers!!!

  • Congrats! Are you guys ready to leave Manhattan for the burbs? We want to start looking to own something within 2 years, and I am not looking forward to leaving Manhattan lol.

Keeping my fingers crossed for you guys!

haha, not really- but when will we ever be?! We had that discussion- we don't REALLY want to leave, but we know we should. We are tired of renting and want to try to get PG in the spring. I DO NOT want to be house hunting OR doing work on a house with a baby. If it were up to me, I would wait 2 years as well, but this is more practical. We love Manhattan, but don't want kids in an apartment, so getting settled now is better for us. Plus, this place is 22 min into Harlem- 125th on Metro North, so it is pretty easy to get into the City.

  • That makes sense. I guess for the most part, who is ready to leave Manhattan? We want to wait a few years before kids, so that give us time to go house hunting. I think might want to start looking to buy something at some point after the wedding next spring. It sounds like you guys will have a good commute getting in and out of the city.

I'm also holding out the hope that maybe we'll win lotto or something, and we can get an apartment in the Dakota :)

DH is 35, I am 31. We want more than 1 kid, so do the math and we need to get on it :) Our wedding is in July (AHHHHHHHHH! A month away!)

I will never stop being jealous of anyone who gets to live in the Dakota.

  • We're both 29, so we still have maybe 2 years left to enjoy child free, haha!

That's right, you're a July bride! Well this will be an awesome summer for you guys!

  • Good luck on your offer!
  • Good luck!!! I guess you have to live in the city to really get it, but I am so not a city person. Think of all the amazing stuff in the burbs- garage, grassy yard, quiet street, jumping in the car and being at the grocery store or Walmart in 5 minutes, getting to know the neighbors because they mostly own and will be there forever, not very many sirens or anything at night. Heck yes to all of that, I love my little 50's burb home and would never want to live in a city. Hopefully you feel that way once you settle in!

Yeah, I didn't grow up in a city, and I actually don't like them :) I moved to Manhattan when I was 25 and I just really love it here- just not cities in general! Odd, I know!

  • Fi and I have become full-on "city people" after our two years in JC.  I'm in Manhattan every day for school and work-- it's literally a 4-minute train ride into TriBeCa for us.  Fi gets to walk to work.  We order our groceries and only drive if we want to visit family.

We are never leaving.  We're looking at condos in our current neighborhood.  FMIL tried to convince me I'd want a yard once we have kids.  Maybe, who knows?  But somehow I doubt it.  I'd rather have a shorter commute so I can actually see my kids after work.

I am the exact opposite of you! It's probably because I've lived in the city my whole life. This is how I see it - grassy yard = mowing the lawn and shoveling the snow. And all that greenery makes my allergies flare up. I HATE driving and I especially hate driving because I have to go to a grocery store or something. I can make it to CVS, Rite Aid, or any supermarket/restaurant, an elevator ride and a hop skip away! I don't really want to know my neighbors. I'm a private person, and some of my neighbors are seriously creepy. And I LOVE city sounds! I was walking back to the office with my coworker a few days ago and I was telling him how I loved the sounds of sirens, horns, cars, loud people, lol. I think once we are ready to own we will need to stay in the city or at least a place that is more like a small city as a compromise.

  • That's great!! I'm in the NYC suburbs, and honestly, I love it. I can be in the city in 30 minutes, or I can be in the mountains in 30 minutes.

I hope the other offer falls through! We had that happen on a house we though for sure was ours! It was a mid 90s Mediterranean-style (like every other house in Phoenix) the floor plan was an exact replica of the house I grew up in, just -1,00 sq ft. It needed work though, didn't come with appliances, half half-done flooring up top, etc. But the floor plan!!! We were outbid and ended up finding a house we liked more. So when the realtor called us and let us know that the first offer fell through, we told her to let it pass.

Things happen for a reason. You may get the house, or you may find something better. And I LOVE 1960s houses! I have a lot of mid-century influence in our house (another mid-90s Mediterranean). I actually wish we could have had one, but unfortunately, all the nice mid-century neighborhoods around us are so expensive that it was cheaper for us to get a bigger, newer house in a better town and a better school district than make a mid century work. I get bummed about that from time to time.

Thanks, we do too. Stuff moves soooo fast around here. They have till tomorrow to execute the inspection or they lose it. I think deals fall through quite a bit around here- it is expensive and there are a lot of regulations. We saw at least 5 houses where deals had fallen through (some more than 1 deal). I don't mind the mid-century homes as much as I just LOVE the 20s homes we saw. But the mid-century ones have way more fuction. We figured we could add the cool details that we love in the other ones, but have more function.

It sounds like they don't want it if they haven't scheduled their inspection yet. When we were looking a lot of people were putting offers on everything they saw just to get something. Then, they would let the ones they didn't like as much go. This may be what happens here.

Yeah, the 1960s houses are definitely built better for living. And the furniture is so cool! You could definitely do details like subway tile or hardwoord floors that would have the warmth of a 1920s house while still working in your 60s home. Plus all the rich wood tones that were in in the 60s are so nice.

This room right here is a good example of one that takes some 1960s influence and makes it warm and almost bungalow like. I think this is the exact blend you are looking for:

  • @sbmini What area of Phoenix are you in? I lived out there for 3 years right where the 101 meets the 17 (like union hills & 7th Ave). I looked for houses to buy, but since I'm fron the East Coast I just could not get used to the fact that they are all SOOO close to one another with little cinderblock back yards. And most of them are HOA's with group mailboxes and I hate those. But they are a shit ton cheaper than what I bought in MA lol

I'm in Gilbert. I come from CA where the houses are even closer and I like the blocked in backyards. Privacy ftw. We have an HOA and group mailbox (had the same thing in CA) so none of those things bother me. I love the cost of living, the food, the culture, the fact that I'm an hour away from some of the best hiking in the nation, the kayaking... etc. I've always been a Southwest girl.

Nice, that must make a huge difference if that's what you grew up with. I grew up with a huge green yard that was separated from neighbors with tall trees and backed up to woods. So I'd play in the woods for hours making tree forts with my brother. My ex from Phoenix was always so sketched out like "What do you mean there are no fenced in back yards? But someone could just walk into your back yard and like steal your grill?" Uuum I guess but that doesn't happen in small towns where everyone knows each other. He came to visit my hometown once and said he felt like he was in a horror movie "in the middle of nowhere". Cracks me up because yea there are woods in the back but there are still houses every 50 yards down the street, it's not like we were the only house for miles LOL.
