FAX MACHINES ARE THE DEVIL

So is bronchitis.

I've been sitting here for the past hour trying to fax 6 pages for my mortgage. How many error pages can it possibly give me? I just want it to say success.

Also, I have bronchitis 18 days before my wedding, and I think I get worse every day despite mucinex and cough medicine. Ow my throat hurts so bad from coughing! It hurts to breathe :(

And this damn fax won't send! What else am I supposed to do??

Re: FAX MACHINES ARE THE DEVIL

  • My fax machine hasn't worked properly since I started at this job...I feel your pain.

Have you been to the doctor? I've been given a Zpac for bronchitis before.

  • I just had a lady ask me to fax something.  I couldn't because I don't  have a fax machine  She was pretty annoyed.

Anyway, when I sold my house I just scanned everything over to the Realtor.  Is that an option?   I even used and app on my Samsung Galaxy to send over a document.  It created a PDF file    Seemed to work fine for me.

  • First, I hate bronchitis. I caugh so hard I can't sleep at night. I always have to have a antibiotic, an inhaler, and cough syrup (the good knock you on your ass stuff) in order to kick it.

Second...I haven't used a fax machine in years. Our business manager was asking me to fax something to him once and I actually yelled "Scan and email! It's the 21st century! I don't even know where a fax is!!" apparently we do have one in the shop. I did not buy it, I don't know who did (probably our business manager) and I never use it.
  • Are you sure you have the right number?

  • I wish we could scan - we have this crazy thing on our internet because of my dads work that will not allow the transferring of social security numbers. And guess whats on my papers? Yep. So I can't scan super frustrating.

Ive never heard of this scan with your phone and make it a PDF file, interesting! I might just start taking pictures of everything and putting it in the email from my phone.

Yea I'm positive I have the right number. Sent lots of stuff before, and it usually does take awhile to actually have success, but seriously this is awful.

  • Mine works great.    When we were moving I needed to sign some papers.  I had them printed up by a hotel.  Then I signed the paper, took a picture which converted it to a PDF.   Then emailed it off..  It was so easy.

  • Genius Scan is the iPhone app that I use for that. Works like a charm.

  • I just got emails from the lady saying "I have 17 incomplete copies of the documents you're trying to send..."

Fuck! If the fax says ERROR, then why the hell are some pages going through at all? Oh good lord. So embarrassing.

  • Ah. Fax machines are terrible. You have my sympaties.

  • Where I used to work we had one of those fax/scanner/printer/copier combos.  Which meant it handled a lot of volume.  So sometimes it would "receive" a fax and hold it in the queue while a major print or copy job was going on.  Then something would go wrong and they would have to clear the queue to get the $%@#*^& to work again. Which would delete everything in the queue so event though the sender had a confirmation sheet we didn't have the freaking information.  I had a woman basically accuse me of lying to her saying she knows how faxes work and if she had a confirmation that meant I had received it.  I was like our fax machine received it but just didn't print it.

  • Sorry, I've got nothing to help with the fax issue.

But if you haven't already yet, please go to the doctor. Bronchitis can get serious fast.  Antibiotics will usually clear it up though, and if you get a Z-pack or two (5 or 10 days I think) you should feel better in time for the wedding.  Just do it quickly!

Can you take narcotics? If so your doctor may prescribe tussionex for the cough. You shouldn't do anything for about 12 hours that requires coordination or brain function but it should stop the cough and help you sleep (unless you're like my friend who reacts like it's speed).

  • I'm thinking about the doctor, but I hate antibiotics! I'm not using condoms on my honeymoon and I don't want a baby haha

OK silliness aside. I can't really take narcotics because I'm a nurse. If I was to take them, I'd have to be out of work because they knock me the hell out. Thank goodness I have 2 more days off before I go back, so we'll hope this clears up. Otherwise I will be taking work off.

  • Why can't you scan them in and then zip them via winzip, and encrypt the zip file?  That should take care of any issues associated with sending social security numbers via email (and for anyone else reading, you really should always encrypt this kind of stuff before sending via email).  You can send a separate email with the password, or just give it verbally over the phone.

Oh wow that sounds really difficult haha. It DID finally send though :)

  • Bronchitis bites the big one. I had it on my wedding day. It wasn't ideal and I was exhausted from being up several nights coughing, but I still had a blast.

I will give you the gift I wish someone had given me. Vapo rub on your feet, with socks of course. All the time. Forever. Until your cough goes away. It helps so so much.
  • Goldenseal and echinacea capsules. Whenever I get a cold it almost always turns into bronchitis and I end up with a cough for two months. Last time I got that cough I took about twice to three times the recommended about of echinacea and goldenseal and it was gone in two days.

Someone else just told me to try this today! Crazy. It must work, so I'll give it a try to sleep!

  • When someone asks me to fax something to them I'm literally like "I just can't with you..." because hello, it's not the 1900's. We email things to one another now. Scan it if you have to. But no fax. Just...no.

And I'm so sorry you are ill. I live by taking Alive multi vitamin in the liquid form and then drinking Emergen-C every day. But in your case I'd be asking for gawd awful steroids that will probably harm you later but certainly make you better for the big day.

    I'm thinking of you. <3

  • We get scanned attachments all the time from the very nice lady at the state. I don't know who fucked with their scanner, but it scans everything as TIFs, not PDFs, and the only way our office computers will open the attachments is with MSPaint.

I also DETEST when the only available form for download is a fucking .doc file. EXPORT IT TO A GOD DAMN PDF. FUCK'S SAKE!!!!!!! Not everybody has MS Office, and LibreOffice likes to have a dance party with formatting so shit is all over the place.

I have no recommendations for cold survival. I usually marathon tv shows and do nothing but peruse tumblr for the duration when I'm not knocked out from meds.

  • I honestly don't know why anyone uses fax anymore. Email is quicker, cheaper, GREENER, and there's this wonderful little thing called a "read receipt", so no chance of fax machines eating your correspondence!

I don't know if it's used anywhere else in the world, but in SA most companies have switched over to "Fax-to-Email". Fax-to-Email numbers are usually prefixed "086" here, so instead of being charged at normal rates, they're charged at VAS rates. So instead of costing the faxer 3c/page it costs 15c/page. Which isn't so much if you're only sending one page, but adds up pretty quickly if you're faxing 50+ page documents.

I just don't understand why anyone would request a fax if they have email... and it's not as if the majority of people even have access to a fax machine anymore. It is SO much easier to scan and email.

But some places still require a hard copy.  When I worked in foster care we had to have actual paper charts with live signatures.  We had everything scanned to the cloud as a backup but by law we had to have those physical charts.  So even if someone e-mailed us something we would have to print it out.  Also, e-mail goes only to the person who sent it.  So say I was waiting on something for a chart that legally had to be in the chart by a specific day and I went on vacation.  If it was e-mailed to me it would sit in my e-mail until I returned to work and by that point we may have violated the law.  Whereas if it was faxed to me the receptionist would have given it to my supervisor who could then properly log it in and file it so we stayed in compliance.

How do you feel about whiskey? Not while working but a shot before bed might let you sleep. Usually works for me. Also by a shot I mean a glass.
