NWR - Switching to the other side of the bed

H and I have lived together for over 4 1/2 years and I have always slept on the right side. No particular reason, just kind of happened when we first moved in and that was that. We moved to a new apartment after our first year and I stayed on the right side. Now we moved into our house and I am still on the right side.

Well we are staying in our future "guest room" while we paint and prep our new bedroom (figured we have the time and space to do that so why not make it nice and then move into a freshly painted and decorated room!) Well here is where the issue is. The bedroom is on the smaller side and with the window, sliding glass door and closet, there is really only one place to put the bed. This would make the right side of the bed RIGHT next to the bedroom door. Not that it would have typically bothered me in the past, but now H works later hours and goes to bed 1-3 hours later then me now. I worry that being right next to the door could wake me (as I am a light sleeper).

So is changing to the left side after over 4 years weird?

Would you do it?

Picture below is obviously NOT to scale! lol Hopefully it will give a better idea. (I measured the wall that the bed will go on and it is 103 of usable space - meaning the door can open wide against the wall and I don't count that space. Our bed it 60 in wide and our new night stands are 18 wide leaving us 7 inches for space between the furniture and again the door can be wide open without hitting the nightstand)

I have to sleep on the side closest to the door. Don't know why, just always have - even in hotel rooms. I don't think it's weird if you are comfortable switching...I think it's less weird then me being unable to switch :-p

  • I sleep on the side closest to the door (our hinges really need to be lubed, they squeak terribly).  If I go to bed before H, the squeaking disturbs me if I'm not fully asleep.  Otherwise, I don't notice.  I also can change sides of the bed without much trouble, but H can't.  Apparently on our honeymoon we switched sides at one hotel and it really bothered him... I had no clue until he mentioned it after the fact.  I would have switched back if he'd asked me to.
  • I have to sleep furthest away from the door. So that means in hotels, and at FI's parent's house, I sleep on the opposite side from our bedroom. It's weird to snuggle "backwards" at first but it's fine after a while.

  • I don't think it is weird to switch, but I also don't think moving a foot and a half farther from the door across the bed will make that big of a difference in whether you wake up or not when he comes to bed if you are a light sleeper.
  • FI insists on sleeping toward the door, "to protect me from intruders." (Apparently intruders don't come in window's in FI's mind.) So we switch if we're in a hotel or someone's house where the room is reversed. Before we lived together, my bedroom was reversed so we switched whenever he stayed over.

  • AHHH WHAT!? NO!!

I would sooner part my hair on the other side.

    (Yes, I'm a weirdo.)
  • I don't think it is weird to switch. I sleep on both sides of the bed. My thing is, I have to sleep on my stomach and angle my body so I am facing the outside of the bed.

  • Noooo - I sleep on the right, and that's that. No switching.

  • I currently sleep on the left side of the bed, furthest from the door. So any time we are in a different room or I rearrange, I change sides. It doesn't effect me to switch because I sleep on my back.

  • I sleep on the right side of the bed, furthest from the door to the rest of the house (but closest to the door to the jack-and-jill bathroom). And no power known could get me to switch.
  • Fi and I have a "side" at home, but when we travel or anything we often mix it up. Neither of us feel particularly tied to a certain side. So I don't think it's a big deal. I'd probably want to be on whichever side is away from the window (odd, because right now I sleep closest to the window, but that's mainly because he already had the right side of the bed all set up since he was living here before me).
  • LOL we never switch! I'm on the left even at hotels. We both sleep on our sides facing away from each other and it's nice since we both snore hahaha

I think you should keep your side because like Nikki said the extra foot probably isn't going to change you hearing him.

  • I have to sleep farthest from the door so we switch it up when we stay somewhere else. FI is a huge cuddler so I usually always face away from him and he spoons me or I'm on my back and his arm and leg are thrown over me.

He's lucky he doesn't snore often cause snoring in someone's ear is not nice and grounds to receive a bony elbow in your stomach.

  • We switch sometimes, and both sleep fine. I actually love rolling over into his warm spot when he leaves for work.

Haha I do that too. He's barely out of bed before I roll over into his warm spot/sprawl out across the whole dang bed.
Same here. And I steal one of his pillows to cuddle with lol.

Me too to all of this (:

  • I do not think I could ever change the side of the bed I slept on. I've slept on the left side for YEARS and I'm attached to it. But I also have a whole bedtime "ritual" (fix the covers, make sure I have enough pillows and he has enough pillows and make sure the blasted tag on the comforter is NOT ALL UP IN MY FACE OMFG) so bedtime is possibly my most OCD-ish times.

YES! I have to wash my face, brush my teeth, put oil on my face and skin, make the bed, fold the covers back, arrange pillows....and so forth.

  •     I think Fi and I are weird. We switch it up all the time. we don't live together, but I stay over at his place 4 nights a week.

He likes to sleep on the right the nights before he works and the left on the nights before he has a day off. His schedule is erratic. He says that way he knows if he has to get up for work or not depending on what side of the bed he's on. He's been this way even when he had a M-F office job. I can sleep anywhere so I just go with it.
  • lol I really enjoyed reading these today! I guess I should actually talk to H about it! It just crossed my mind and figured I would post it as I wont see him till 9 tonight. He's a heavy sleeper so I don't think he'll care. I'm just more worried in his heavy sleep he'll roll over to the wrong side and I'll get squished out....

  • I sleep on the right side.   Every now and then we switch it up, but DH always wants to go back.

In your case, switching sides would not make a difference for me.  we are only talking a few feet.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.

When FI first stayed over, he slept on the left side. Since moving in together, no matter the position of the bed, I've been on the left. It made for interesting mornings when my side was against the waIl had to climb over him at 5 am to go to work. He soon rolled to my side when I left for work.

When FI works weekends now, I sprawl on his side

  • A few have responded about it only being a few feet so it wouldn't matter... I guess my concern is more that I tend to face outward when I sleep (as H likes to be super close and I like more space) so I feel like if I am facing outward the door would be opening right in my face.. vs my back being against it...

Dude FI just throws the comforter on the bed whichever damn way he feels like. Sometimes it's sideways, sometimes it's wrong side up, THESE THINGS HAVE A RIGHT WAY AND A WRONG WAY, MISTER.

  • I've always slept on the right since we moved in. If the bed is against the wall I take that side. That's habit from when we were in university and the twin bed/ twin size, top bunk bed was against the wall. For some reason I slept/sleep better that way. Otherwise I better be on the right.

  • I sleep on my back or left side.  When I'm on my side I need to be facing out so when we started dating I took that side of the bed when I stayed at his place and kept it when we married. Anywhere we stay I pick that side.

When we were dating my parents had us sleep in separate rooms when we visited them.  Their house, their rules, no issues.  Once we got married he obviously stayed in my room.  So he goes to his side of the bed and I'm like "that's my side".  He looked at me like I was crazy.  I slept on the opposite side when I'm my parent's house because that's that side the nightstand, clock, and lamp are on.  But now it's his side.

  • I just realized we don't really have set sides, we just sleep there because that's where our blanket/pillow is. And we have seperate blankets because of blanket hoggery.

  • How is it weird? You must have a really normal life to consider that weird.

    What.

  • We made the critical mistake of buying one of those mattresses that has a firm side and a softer side. It's the worst mattress ever and I seriously wonder if I'm permanently damaging my back with it.

Anyway, when we rotate the mattress, we switch sides accordingly.

  • Well I asked H last night, and immediately said "YES!" He feels like his right shoulder tends to hurt as he has to angle it weird to cuddle sometimes and want's to even it out.

So that was easy, once we move into the new room we will be switching sides!
