Really regretting letting my bridesmaids choose their dresses so early

Total face palm moment!  I wanted to give my ladies a ton of time to get themselves organized (particularly because they mostly live in Australia, and the dresses are all much cheaper here, so I'm going to have to order and post everything for them).  One of the parameters I gave them was to go with any shade of blue based purple.

At the time, I thought I was going to be doing ivory shoes that matched the dress, but now I'm loving the idea of something different, and outright hating the matchy-matchy look for the wedding.  Now, I've discovered all these customize your own shoes websites, and I'm really having difficulty working out what to get.  I ordered some in purple satin with an ivory lace overlay, which will obviously work.  Then, as I joke, I made some "ruby slippers" and sent the pic to my MOB.  She was my nanny when I was a child, and helped me out with all of the creative stuff.  When I was 10, I played Dorothy in a school play, and because of giant tall people feet, we couldn't find any ruby slippers in my size, even from costume stores.  We ended up applying red glitter paint to an old pair of MOB's shoes.  So, there's some sentimentality attached to it, and I think the overall message of the film was nice and sort of works with a wedding.

But, I feel like really red shoes won't go with what the BMs have chosen.  Some of them have already purchased their dresses, so it's too late to go back and say, "actually, red based purples please!"  Alternately, I could make the same shoes in silver, which is actually what she was wearing in the book.  It just turned out that silver and yellow brick road looked terrible together in Technicolor.

I'm also wondering a little bit about how much people will notice the shoes.  They might show a little when I'm walking down the aisle, but not while I'm standing still during the ceremony.  I can make sure that they're not obvious in any photos involving the BMs, and by the time we get to dancing, I won't be standing next to them, there'll be other people on the dance floor, etc.

What do you ladies think on this issue?

Thanks for your help.

tl;dr: The shoes I love don't go with my BMs dresses!

  • So the ruby slippers are your shoes? I don't think it matters at all if they don't match your BM's! I've never noticed anyone's shoes at a wedding, for that matter. I never considered if my shoes would "match" anything except what I'm wearing.

    Totally nbd. Don't worry.
  • Thank you ladies.  I've never noticed anyone's wedding shoes either, or if I did, I don't remember them, so was thinking it wouldn't be a big deal, but just wanted some feedback.

Nobody will see your shoes except your photographer (and any guests you choose to show!).  Go for the red ruby shoes!
  • Thanks @JoanE2012 I was fairly sure that would be the case.

  • I love red and purple together!

  • Don't sweat it! Many people don't notice your shoes anyways and the red may actually be a nice pop of color! It is sweet that they have sentimental value to you.

  • I love the ruby red slipper idea! That's so cool and a fun memory. Nobody will care if your shoes match your bridesmaids, I was just at a wedding yesterday and have no memory of what was on anyone's feet lol. Go for it and don't think twice :)
