How do I treat cabin fever?

TL;DR version: FI's bored with sitting at home all day; what are some fun things we can get out and do inexpensively?

Long, useless-info-filled version: FI is not used to not working. He has worked - in a busy, pointy-object-filled kitchen, no less - since 2007.

His last day at work was July 27th. He spent the week after that moving out of his apartment and getting settled here with us. We went to the beach with my family the week after that. Now we're in the third week, and he's going a wee bit cabin-feverish. He's dropped resumes at two restaurants. At the first, he spoke with the owner, who also owns two other restaurants and manages our local country club (so I guess that technically takes the total to five?). The "interview" was haphazard, and a food rep who was there seemed to do most of the interviewing. At the second, the owner had stepped out and wasn't expected back any time soon but a front-of-house employee left his resume with a note on the owner's desk and FI is going to try and catch him tomorrow and actually speak with him. I know he was intending to drop a third resume off today, although I don't know if he got around to it.

Now, I'm not getting involved in the job search. He's generally a big boy and can get a job for himself. BUT I'm worried that he's getting stir crazy with all the extra off time. He's a naturally busy sort of person, and he doesn't like too much downtime. He sort-of-complained in Florida about how much downtime there was, because we tend to just sit around in the condo or by the pool and only have a few Things planned for our trips. But being new to the area, and farther away from civilization than he's been recently used to, combined with being temporarily unemployed, is making it hard for him to get out and waste time doing things.

I've tried to think of a couple of inexpensive things for us to do (what with him being unemployed ATM and my cash flow being pretty small) but I'm not coming up with much. There's a lake and a neat state park nearby, but nothing super exciting, and neither of those are really up FI's alley. I took him out to dinner Friday and wound up accidentally breaking myself for the week, haha :/ so something cheaper than dinner and also more interesting would be nice as well. I know this is something that local people would be able to answer better, but I'm not really looking for super specific ideas, just maybe general suggestions if you've got'em.

  • What about a picnic? They can be really romantic and totally inexpensive!

  • i know how FI and I like to pass the time.... ;)
  • Books? Video games? Is there a free adult sports league around? A tap takeover at a local bar? A couple drinks are cheaper than dinner.

  • Go for a hike (or just a nature walk)! H and I are huge hikers. It's amazing how just roaming around for a few hours outside can completely refresh you.

Take a book to the park, play tennis or frisbee or soccer outside, see if it's cheap to rent canoes somewhere, look for local craft or art festivals, wander through a farmer's market, look up local parks and recreation programs and classes.

@JCbride2015 I just want to get him out of the HOUSE he played Final Fantasy XIV ALL DAY FOR A WEEK and I don't want to get him started on that cus I WANNA PLAY DAMMIT! *stomps foot stubbornly* But a tap takeover... hmmm. Tell me more. We did a barhop thing a few months back to a couple of local brewpub type places that was really fun; maybe we'll hop back to them...

@PineapplePopsicles We get a real, actual bed (instead of a mattress on the floor) on Friday! AND DRAWERS TO GET OUR CLOTHES OUT OF LAUNDRY BASKETS AND LAUNDRY BASKETS OUT OF OUR ROOM!!!!!! I am sososososososososososo excited. Hopefully that will make ... life ... a lot more fun! I'm just trying to get him out of the house, though. I work all day so he's kind of stuck at home by himself.

@SaraBrideSoon that could be fun! Although FI is not nearly into picnics as much as I am. Perhaps he can be persuaded though.... :D

@manateehugger I tried to convince him to go to the farmers market this past saturday... and then Friday happened and we slept until 11 and the farmer's market was over at noon. Unfortunately we aren't hikers, or there'd be a lot of fun in that for us. I might see if I can get him to play frisbee though.

  • A tap takeover is when a particular brewery "takes over" a bar for the night and serves a whole bunch of their own beers, and there are usually some swag giveaways.  It's just a fun night and tends to be a little more social than an average night at a bar.  You could Google your area or look at the websites for your favorite bars.

  • I know the trapped at home feeling all too well. I can't even really leave the house, so I'm super trapped and super bored. I have been watching random shows/movies on Netflix and OnDemand Cable. I have also been working on research for potential vacations, managing my finances more (401k rebalances, investment opps, updating savings/retirement goals), and becoming better organized with new filing systems.

If I could leave the house, i'd probably just jump in my car and drive around. It's okay to explore the area wirhout really getting out and doing anything. My DH has been doing that in our new area while I'm stuck in AZ. He also has been checking out random museums, but he is also staying in a large downtown area.

  • OOOOH @Jells2dot0 I could drag him to the museum! We do have one of those (and it's actually pretty nifty). I hate that you're all cooped up though, hopefully you can get out and do something soon. He's not really cooped up so much as bored out of his mind and unsure of the area.

JC, I have literally never heard of such a thing but I will have to look into the chances of one in our area. FI would LOVE that. Not me so much, but I'll just DD for him. Beer's not my thing.

  • Picnics, hiking, board games, cook a meal together. Lots of museums have free or discount admission days.

Is there a downtown area with anything going on? Our city does "First Fridays" on the first Friday of every month. They have free concerts, art walks, etc.

Check your local library. Most libraries offer free community classes/events --- I recently went to a fruit carving demonstration at my library and it was amazing.

  • Wineries! In my area, tastings of 4-6 wines are included and then you pay per glass.
