Cute idea? Or too sappy?

FI is a firefighter, so for my wedding gift to him, I was thinking about getting him a "married pair" (haligan and axe set) of his own engraved with our wedding date. He doesn't have any tools of his own yet aside from some special extrication gloves I bought him for our anniversary, and I figured it could be a cute wedding gift that he would actually use.

Do you think this would be a good idea? Or am I just being a sap? Lol

Would he get made fun of at the firehouse if he used it or is this for at home use?

I was with a fire fighter for six years.  He would have gone nuts over this idea (loved it).  I don't know if he would have brought it to the station though.  It would really have depended on which crew/station he was with at the time.

Most of the guys at his station all have their own tools, so FI can use it at work it he wanted to. Or he could keep it at home to go with the firehouse themed mini bar we are putting in the basement. Maybe I am too much of a sap... lol

Question: if you do get it for your FI, and he uses them at work, and they are damaged in a fire, will you be upset? If yes, I recommend skipping them or getting them to keep at home. I imagine he'd love a set of his own tools, but the engraving might make them too sentimental for him to want to use while rescuing people.

I don't think it's a good idea. The thought of putting something as romantic and happy as marriage stuff on something he will use to tear houses and crap down is squicky. When I was touring a ballroom it was set up for a wedding later that day. They had the most adorable cake cutting fireaxe with their names on it. I think both B+G were firefighters.

Why not give him the tools without the engraving. It will still be special as it's a wedding gift. He'll be thrilled to have his own tools and doesn't have to worry about people asking about it / poking fun.

My FI used to be a firefighter so I just asked him and he said it would be a really nice idea. But it would be a display piece for the home and he wouldn't actually use it.
