Re: Lame attempt by the wedding industry to get you to spend more

  • This sounds like possibly the most poorly conducted research... ever.

  • I love how they asked recently married people...how about asking people who got married more than 10 years ago? My parents always say they got married in their front lawn and they are happy 36 years later, but all their friends who had fancy church weddings are divorced. Obviously not saying that's a fact, but a trend among their circle. I also have 3 friends from high school who cheated and got divorced within one year of their huge weddings.

  • Haha, I saw this on the news yesterday! I meant to post something about it and completely forgot. Worst "study" ever.

  • I got your back, @pinkcow13.  BTW, LOVE your Selena at the HLSR siggy!
  • Ehh-not so much.  According to this take on the study there were controls for income and education, to it doesn't necessarily equate to expensive wedding = happy marriage:

And while guest size obviously has a huge effect on wedding cost, the correlation is far from perfect--there are plenty of 200-person backyard barbecue bashes and 50-person lavish destination wedding blowouts that are thrown every week.  All the authors of the study are suggesting is that if you declare your vows in front of a larger group of people, you MAY be more likely to keep them.  I personally think the more likely explanation for this finding though is that couples with larger social support networks may have an easier time navigating married life because of that support.
  • This is so incredibly insulting and STUPID.

  • Thanks! I've adored Selena since I was a kid so I figured it would be a cool gif!

I still remember where I was when I heard about her death.  I was on a weekend field trip to San Antonio for school.  It was CRAZY how many places and cars had signs for her.  So sad.
  • I know 4 couples who had their honeymoons at Disney World.  2 of them are now divorced.  Should I proclaim that to be a "study", too?
  • In NY she really became famous after her death, for the most part. I knew who she was because my parents owned a music store, and she made a guest appearance on a Spanish soap opera my mom and I used to watch (lol). Her story was all over the news and then everyone knew who she was. I remember girls used to wear Selena shirts to school and stuff. I know that she was already famous and adored in San Antonio though, so it must have been really sad when the news first came out.

My honeymoon was a Disney world. Am I now doomed?!

Sorry, just threw up in my mouth a little bit. My parents' friends got married in shorts and tshirts on the beach with about 12 people there 20 years ago. They're still married and probably one of the happiest couples I've ever known.

    Your move, wedding industry.

  • Well, I guess I should just throw in the towel since we aren't having a huge wedding. FI is going to be so upset when I tell him it is over tonight.

  • "If this all seems like some sort of conspiracy to get people to plan big, fancy weddings, it's not!"

Laughing so hard right now. Because throwing a huge wedding you can't afford and sinking yourselves in debt makes for a great start. *eye roll*

  • Alright...who wants to come to my wedding? I need more people now so....strangers on the internet will have to work.

500 should do it right? Eh, lets go a 1,000 just to be sure. We are both from divorced parents, we need the extra staying power.

Also I googled the hell out of this organization that did the study, everything they do is MARRIAGE MARRIAGE MARRIAGE YOU MUST GET MARRIED OR YOU WILL BE SAD!!!!! And the guy who runs it is all TRADITIONAL MARRIAGE MAN WOMAN BABY!!!!!! MUST HAVE DA BABIES!!!!!!!! So yeah no seems like a real study.
  • @magicink, will there be booze?
  • @sarahbear31...probably. But cash bar. The study didn't say I had to throw a good wedding. Just a big one.
  • @magicink, I gots a flask.  NBD.
