What do you wear to go out?

My bachelorette is Saturday night and I have no idea what to wear. We're going for dinner then dancing, a night I love but haven't done in years. We're all mid-30's and half of the ladies are moms- we're the older crowd. We're all super-excited to go out but most of us only do big bar hopping/dancing nights when someone is getting married!

We'll be in downtown Chicago. I know the restaurant and suspect that the clubs are all pretty laid back. For those who know the area, we'll be around Rush and Division, I believe. One of the ladies is married to a cop who works in the area so I've heard a few clubs are expecting us, though I don't know for sure.

So what do I wear going out? Jeans, heels, and a cute top? A dress? Am I expected to wear anything white? I'm a short-ish tubby thing so I have a hard time finding cute things that fit. I'm not concerned about looking trendy or anything like that, I just don't want to embarrass myself. My default plan is my standard black maxi dress with chunky jewelry but my sister already teases me that it's become my uniform.

Any ideas?

  • Hello fellow Chicagoan!

I generally stick with my standard little black dress and heels. For a more casual place (like my suburb bars), I might do jeans and a nice top, but not for a city club.
  • I agree with Ashley--dress it up a bit! Pop some foldable flats in your purse for later if you're worried about doing heels for the long haul. I would go with something shorter than a maxi, but only because I feel like they tend to feel pretty "daytime."

You don't have to wear white. Chances are someone will force you to wear a horrifying tiara or sash with "Bachelorette" on it--if they do not, count yourself as lucky. Your crowd will ensure that bartenders, random dudes, and everyone else at the bar knows it's your bachelorette. Expect lots of drinks; eat something carb-y and absorbing beforehand.

    Have a fantastic time!

  • You can never go wrong with a knee length little black dress. Since you're the bride to be, you can go in a cream coloured dress. This is what I did for my bachelorette last week!

  • I normally like dark skinny jeans, heels, a pretty tank top and something sparkly. LBD always works. Or full sequins. ;)

    Hello, fellow Chicago bride!

I know that area. I would definitely go with a black dress and heels. Add colorful jewelry and a belt so it looks more "fun" than "funeral". Bring flats as others suggested.

Saturday's forecast looks absolutely perfect (sunny, high of 70, low of 59), so you could wear pretty much anything but a sweater. :)

None of my friends have ever worn white for their bachelorette parties. Most of them wear a sweater dress with boots, a black cocktail dress with heels, or a long shirt, skinny jeans, and boots. It just depends on where we're going.
  • It depends for me. I either wear a bright pattern top, tight pants and fun sparkly jewelry or a knee length or maybe little shorter dress with the same kind of jewelry. For the pants I would pick something dark wash, lighter jeans seem more day time than night out. Also depending on my outfit I either wear heels, or boots.

  • My Bachelorette was in chicago also :) I ended up wearing a lbd with some chunky jewelry and heels. I would say that is a pretty good go to. One of my girls wore this awesome black wide leg jumpsuit with heels, so you could always try something like that if you want to be a little different?
  • I like form fitting dresses for girls nights out on the town. But I also say that tailored jeans, heals/wedges and a dressy top are completely acceptable to any destination!

  • Well, the bars around here are not that fancy, so sometimes I'll do a dress but most of the times it is a nice top and jeans or something.  But, for your bachelorette at a "big city" club, I say wear a sexy little dress.  Examples of what I mean:
