What is the appropriate order of things (re: invitations)

Hello, 

I am confused and I figured The Knot will totally help (or remind me what Google is for).  Anyhow, my wedding is on May 24th 2015.  We are planning on sending out Save The Dates somewhere in October. 

My MOH wants to throw me a lovely shower in March, so she is asking me for a  guest list and addresses, as she would like to send invites in January.  My only concern is that we won't have sent out our formal wedding invitations yet.  So is that going to be an issue? (All guests will get an STD and a formal wedding invite from me.  No one who is not invited to the wedding will be invited to the shower).

Not a problem.  I think my shower was 2 weeks before my wedding invites went in the mail.

January is way too early to send out shower invites. I think they should be sent out no sooner than a month before.
