Ladystache

So as I get older, the hair on my upper lip keeps getting darker. I'm getting pretty self-conscious.

I am clueless when it comes to bleach and hair remover.

Please to be giving me some suggestions.

Maybe I should just get it waxed? I get my eyebrows waxed every few weeks because I absolutely cannot keep up with plucking alone. I think I'm part Yeti.

  • Also, where the fuck did my avatar go? It's there when I go to my profile. >:(
  • I shave mine. It's always been really dark though. Yay for getting EVERY American Indian gene in my muddled ancestry, plus my dad's hair. -.-

Also - people's avatars just change. Like, ohannabelle is usually flowers but today I think I saw her with champagne glasses and a ring too. I don't even pay attention to avatars anymore. They aren't reliable.

  • I wax my upper lip as part of my normal routine when I do my eyebrows.  Over time, the regrowth has gotten thinner and I can go longer between waxings.  I have never tried shaving it, but bleaching was still more trouble than it's worth because the hair is still there.  I just rip it out.

I get that the TK avatars change, but I've had one uploaded forever. It's a pug. :) The uploaded ones don't change back to the generic TK avatars. They shouldn't, anyway.

Oh but they do change. Because TK. But it's back now!

Oh, I know you're the pug. I always think, "awww" every time I see it. :D I was just noting that TK hasn't been reliable with them recently.

  • I use nair for the face on my upper lip and eyebrows.  I do still have to pluck a little around my eyebrows (don't want to get the nair too close and lose a chunk of eyebrow), but I'm really happy with the results.  I do it about every 10 days-2 weeks.

  • I bleach mine at the same time that I lighten my eyebrows with jolene creme bleach. It's pretty simple, just mix it together per the directions, spread it on and let it sit. IMO the hair is hardly noticeable when it's bleached. But I'm probably going to switch to having it threaded when I get my eyebrows threaded, just to have it all gone.

  • I don't have a huge problem with mine (one of the benefits of having blond hair, I guess) but I do get it waxed very occasionally, and definitely will for the wedding.  I definitely recommend waxing.  Some of my friends have had horrible experiences with bleaching and in the end, the hair is still there, just hopefully less noticeable.

  • I get it waxed when I go in to get my eyebrows done.  Thanks Daddy for those hairy Italian genes.

  • So. Question about waxing. I heard it can cause your skin to sag over time. True or not true?

I get self conscious about my ladystache. Eyebrows, shit, that's what bangs are for.

I'm totally curious now.  I've never heard this.

  • If you have time and money, you can go to electrolysis hair removal, or even laser removal.  I have done both, with some results.   It is very expensive, and takes a long time with many treatments.

I thought Nair burninated your skin. Does it hurt?

    (YAY MY PUG IS BACK)
  • I pluck. I have pretty dark hair on my upper lip (and a few between my chin and my lower lip, where a soul patch would be) and if I didn't pluck my eyebrows, I'd have a unibrow.

My advice is pluck EVERY DAY.  If I pluck ever day, it doesn't get ahead of me and then I have to pluck a ton.  I pluck maybe 5 to 10 each day, sometimes less and once in awhile I skip a day, and it adds less than a minute to my morning routine.

My MIL does the thread method.  She gets a fair amount of hair on her face.  It's really fast once you get the hang of it.  I have yet to try it on myself.  She only just taught me when we were visiting a few weeks ago.
  • I use this on my ladystache. It works great.

  • I get my upper lip threaded when I do my eyebrows. I  like threading a lot better than waxing because it is better for your skin.

  • I'd suggest waxing. Bleaching sounds like a bitch!

  • I've had a fuzzy upper lip since high school. Not dark hairs, just...fuzzy lol. I wax it probably 2 times a year and do hair removal creams in between. I'd prefer to wax it monthly, but I don't want to pay for it that often.

I tried those at home waxing strips...they were alright for in between regular waxings but nothing I'd recommend unless you are really good at them.

  • If you don't want the hair to become darker/thicker or damage your skin the best thing to do is shave because it has no affect under the skin whatsoever if you want something more permanent then there is electrolysis which is more of an investment but is permanent.  Other options all have up and down sides to them.

Shaving-cuts hair at the skin, has to be done more often then other methods but is quick.

Waxing/Plucking-longer lasting results but due to the trauma at the follicle when it comes back it will be darker/thicker.

Bleaching-lightens hair but can also affect the colour of your skin making it very noticeable that you did something.

Remover Creams-Breaks down the hair above the skin but your hair is stronger than your skin so it can do some damage and burns (has happened to me trust me not fun).

Electrolysis-Cauterizes the blood supply in the follicle so that the hair has no food supply then it can't grow.

Hope this helps with your decision.

Not at all.  At the end of the 10 minutes there is a tiny little tingle, but it isn't even a little painful at all.  I also use the Nair that is specifically for the face.  I use a pointed q-tip to apply it more precisely around my eyebrows.

  • I get it threaded along with my eyebrows. Pluck in between for strays.
  • I also use the hair remover creams. My favorite is the Sally Hansen facial one. I've never had an issue with burning or even redness after I wipe it off. But I don't have sensitive skin.

I've gotten my upper lip waxed before and for some reason it makes me break out. Just there. Waxing my eyebrows doesn't.

This is a complete myth. Any damage to the follicle will only cause the hair to not grow back at all, not make the hair grow back thicker. How would damaging cells cause them to create a stronger product??

If the blood supply at the base of follicle is permanently damaged then yes it can lead to no future hair growth but the trauma sends a rush of blood to the area to help it heal.  Blood feeds the hair so by sending a rush of it to the damaged follicle it can increase hair growth of not only that follicle but the ones around it.

  • I waxed my upper lip at home (I do it at night so the redness can calm down) but I started noticing that there was wax residue and little zits would form, so I switched to Nair spa clay for the face.  It isn't 100% effective (there's always a stry or three that are stubborn) because I'm terrified of leaving it on too long, but it doesn't block my pores.  It can make my upper lip a tad dry though.  I can't win.

In between sessions I just pluck any dark strays that creep up.  I only use the cream every 2 months or so.

  • I pluck every once in awhile.  Whenever I get my eyebrows threaded they offer to do my ladystache, but it honestly isn't bad enough to warrant the extra money (it's like $7).  But I like threading more than waxing, and it is quicker than plucking.

But that blood flow doesn't change the inherent makeup of your hair; that's determined by your genetics. You can't make hairs grow thicker or darker aside from something dramatic like chemo. Hairs that grow back may appear darker than others because they hasn't been exposed to sun yet, but the hair itself is the same as it always has been. My arm hair changes color over the course of the year because my hair naturally lightens in the sun, but the inherent, original color of it always remains the same. As new hairs grow in to replace those that naturally shed, they're back to being the natural, darker color.

  • I used to use Surgi (sp?) cream and it worked great. Lately, I've been getting the stache waxed, or when I used to live in LA, I'd get it threaded.
