hand/foot/mouth disease

Anyone heard of this?! (CLICKY) Apparently it is super common among kids- especially babies in daycare. Adults don't really get it, so I had never heard of it before. Anyway, my niece has it AND NOW SO DO I.

It is truly awful. Not only have I been run-down with a headache for the past few days, but I also spent Wednesday night vomiting. My throat has been hurting. And now, to add insult to injury - my hands are COVERED in red bumps and they hurt like crazy. Please, tell me this will go away soon!

I can barely type :(

Re: hand/foot/mouth disease

  • Yeah, my sister had it a couple years ago (she's only 13 though).  What's really bad is that she already breaks out in terrible hives every time she's sick (weird autoimmune shit the doctors can't really figure out) and has asthma (it's all tied in together), so it was extra painful for her.

I know she took tons of oatmeal baths to help just soothe the discomfort of the rash, and she slept a ton.

  • Oh you poor thing!  :(  I used to work with kids, so I'm aware of it...luckily was never around it, so I have no comforting antidotes about how quickly it'll pass.

At least it's the weekend....have DH pamper and take care of you!

  • GROSS!

I've heard of it.. Everyone with daycare children usually end up with it! I'm sorry you got sick! It's super contagious, hope your DH doesn't catch it!

  • Aww poor thing :(

I work with kids as well, and I've never heard of it. I'm usually just terrified of getting the fall colds and winter flus that make their way around to everyone in the building. Feel better soon!!

  • My mom had a small outbreak in her in-home daycare about a month ago. I popped over for dinner because I was in town and she wiped me and everything I brought with me down with Lysol wipes before I left, haha. She got it but it did clear up really fast!

  • I used to work in a day care in 1 year old room.  I worked there for almost two years, it seemed that we had 2 rounds of it a year, 1 in spring and 1 in fall.  We were trained to keep a look out for it, and let the parents know.

For the itching and bumps I definitely recommend the oatmeal baths.  The rest of it is just rest and hydration, taking care of yourself like you would if it were any other kind of sick.

It normally doesn't last too long.  Most of the kids I worked with were back within a week.  Babies heal really fast though so it might take you a little longer maybe like a week and a half.

Make sure you take it easy and just veg out during the weekend.  I hope you feel better.

  • Yup, I had it as a teenager. It was awful. Blisters so bad on my feet that I couldn't walk, and on my hands so I couldn't hold a pencil. I lived on ice cream. Try calamine lotion, like for chicken pox. But don't go to the store yourself!

Omg, I was trying to eat earlier but I couldn't hold my spoon! Calamine sounds like a good suggestion- I tried a hydrocortisone but it is sadly not working.

Oh no! I'm so sorry hun, that stinks. A couple friends of mine who have a baby son both got it from him, and of course he got it from daycare.

    Sending you lots of hugs!

  • I hear it's awful and pray that it doesn't strike my home. I hear parents swear by a wash of Mylanta and Benadryl for mouth sores.

banana468- My niece was miserable, but she felt better in 2 days or so. My sister and I both got it (rare for adults, but we both got hit.....). Mine is a lot worse than hers. Niece was sick Sunday-Tuesday ish and I have been sick since Tuesday. My hands finally no longer feel like they are absolutely on fire but at the moment feel just a little like they are burning. It is my FEET right now that I can't handle. I can barely leave the couch because it hurts too bad to walk.
