SO FREAKING SCARY!

A woman was beheaded randomly by a coworker in an Oklahoma office!! They say the suspect is Islamic and was trying to convert his coworkers before the attack. Officials are trying to find out if he was following ISIL beliefs or what.

I am so so afraid of something happening like this in the hospital! You never know what kind of creepy psychotic person you will be taking care of - my nightmare is becoming more and more real!

I'm not one to believe crazy things. But I swear the apocalypse is here. I don't want to experience a world with all of this craziness and fear!

- Edited to say I'm not trying to blame any faith. I love the Islamic faith and have lots of friends and coworkers who follow it! I'm glad 120 of the faiths leaders have written a letter denouncing ISILs actions and premise.

Re: SO FREAKING SCARY!

  • This ISIS stuff really creeps me out. I'm usually not a scaredy cat, but that group is crazy.

You're probably pretty safe in a hospital compared to any other public place. You're a nurse right?

You have such a hard job. You see people when they are at their worst, and you never know what kind of patient you will have. You probably have more issues with mentally unstable patients than ISIS sleepers though.

    I suppose you're right.. But...

    YOU NEVER KNOW!!!

I wrote in one thread my fear about a patient and their visitors jumping me when I come into the room, forcing me into the bathroom and beheading me.

Seriously.. I've had such bad nightmares since the foiled plot in Australia... I used to always say to myself, if anything terroristic happens, they'd pick somewhere more popular or important to the nation... Not my little suburb of Dallas.. But now that random people are going out to behead strangers, and this little town in Oklahoma was affected, I'm pretty scared.. I'm not sure why it affects me so much. I'm not an anxious person and I don't take any medication for anxiety. But maybe I need to now for this shit!

  • Sorry sugargirl, I think I'd be more scared in Texas.  I mean...what do you think the easiest way is to sneak into the US at the moment?

I get scared in Atlanta that something will happen.  Between the CDC, the airport, the major highways....scary!!

  • I work at a law firm and we get a ton of crazy angry people. Guys with guns, guys that throw staplers at us... It's scary to think that this could happen at any moment
  • Sometimes I wonder if it is because I'm older and more aware of the news, and that the news is reported faster and 24/7 that makes it look like MORE bad things are happening, when in reality we are just getting really good at quickly reporting ALL the bad news...  Like, it's the same amount of bad things, but we catch way more of it to report than 20 years ago, so it feels like more bad news.

Beheading someone is VERY unnecessary to kill someone.  This person didn't just want to kill, they wanted to kill dramatically.  Talk about deranged.

In Canada a few years back, a psychotic person killed a kid on a greyhound bus and was taunting people with the kid's dismembered head.  He was eating pieces of the kid while the mounties watched.  The crazy guy is out on a day pass now.

So much crazy out there...  Be safe everyone.

I think you're mostly right about reporting of awful things increasing, as opposed to awful things themselves. Things like the Greyhound killing and the beheading of the coworker yesterday are so shocking that they'd likely be reported no matter what decade they occurred in, though.

There have been a number of studies (including an FBI study this week) that have found that there has been a dramatic increase in the number of mass shootings in the last 15 years. They posited that many of these shootings were inspired by previous shootings, as well.

Edited to fix words n stuff

I used to sleep on public transportation to deal with nausea, but that story horrified me and I have not done so since.

There have been other crazy stories in the news about this stuff in tourist areas, and combined with the ridiculous gun craze here I admit that I am pretty paranoid, too. And I agree that the violence and severe ignorance in the world today seems to have increased dramatically since the 90's.

Not sure if this will help easy anyone's mind, but I would suggest taking (I'm seriously thinking of it) self-defense classes or freshening up 1st aid classes. Can't hurt to have that knowledge. I've always tried to act aware and look tough when on my own to avoid sexual predators (which sucks, of course...).

It's more important now than ever to live compassionately and to do whatever good we can in the world.

Then happy I, that love and am beloved

  • So, maybe it's because of where I live.  But I really try not to let this stuff get to me.  I work (guys!  I'm starting on Wednesday!  I can basically use present tense now!) in a fairly famous building in the most famous intersection in the world.  The fact is that if there's another major dramatic attack, chances are it will be on my doorstep.  I commute through WTC every day.  I can see WTC and the Statue of Liberty from my front door.  The NYPD are constantly foiling some plot or another in Times Square or in the subway.  And other non-terrorist crazy shit happens in NYC constantly.  People are nuts.

But what are we supposed to do?  Be smart, keep your eyes open, and live your life.  We can't live in fear.

So much this.  We cant lock ourselves in our houses.  We need to get out there and live our lives.  Let's be conscious of our surroundings and trust our instincts.

This is a really interesting book on the psychology of fear and misperceptions of risk (clicky).

  • I agree with JC. We have to be vigilant, but really just live our lives. The enemy is winning if we let fear of their terror get the better of us.
