Help me shop!

So as some of you may recall, DH and I are going to Ireland in December. I've read the weather is fairly mild there, but it will still probably be a bit colder than we are used to in Texas. I need recs for a nice wool (wool blend is fine too) coat that isn't too bulky so it can go on the plane with me. I am an extremely petite 5 foot nothin', usually size medium, with thicker than average farm girl arms and a large bust, so ordering online without recs is probably an aggravation waiting to happen.

Price point is preferably below the $150 range, but I'm willing to go higher if it's going to last me a decade or so. I'm trying to buy better quality items starting with this coat, and have no idea where to begin. TIA!

  • Is Ireland wet at that time of year? If it is, you may want to skip the wool. Wet wool is really gross.

I would get a longer, water-proof coat. I got one from Eastern Mountain Sports a few years ago that I LOVE. I can't find the link, but it covers my butt and has a hood that you can snap, which is nice when it gets windy.

  • I spent an entire January in Ireland. I would definitely suggest layering a raincoat over sweaters, rather than getting a wool coat. You will never get the wet out of your coat if you go with that. Not only does it rain almost every day, but it is also very windy.

  • Good point. Though H treated his wool peacoat with something so it sheds water. I have a rain parka from when we visited Alaska. It's thin and just goes over stuff. Guess I can use that.
  • Yeah the waterproof trench coat my mom insisted I bring was a lifesaver when I went to Paris and London in November many years ago.
