ski/ snowboard in August?

Since this board gets a lot more action than the honeymoon board....

Since the day I met DH, he has said his dream vacation would be to go snowboarding on his birthday in August. Not my cup of tea but since I dragged him to China & Japan last year, this year is his turn. I don't even know where to start- when I google I'm coming up with Chile, New Zealand, and parts of France & Switzerland. NZ is just too far and flights are way too expensive from Boston. Mt. Hood in Oregon has summer camps but from reviews they sound like not top notch snow or accomodations so I'd rather go out of the country where it's it's going to be worth it and offer him really amazing slopes. Has anyone been skiing at any of these places or have any recommendations on mountains or resorts or anything in these countries?

I'm going to call my mom the travel agent but she specializes in Caribbean and cruises so she might not have an immediate plan of attack either.

Re: ski/ snowboard in August?

  • Some friends of ours did an Andes trip (Chile and Argentina) a few summers ago and said it was really fun. I've never been to the ski resorts there, so no first hand accounts. But we've traveled there on other trips and had a really good time. The flights don't take that long and the time difference is minimal - read: no jet lag. Might be worth checking out.

  • I'm not a lot of help, but I live in the Canadian Rockies and I know there's nothing up here in August - I'm guessing you'll have to either go Southern Hemisphere or somewhere indoor/that manufactures a ton of snow (likely a smaller hill.) Ski season is usually late November/early December until May up here.

  • @southernbelle0915 If you get around to it, would you mind asking your friends where they skied/stayed? I've been googling all day and it seems like there are about 5-10 really good resorts down there. I'm not sure how to go about booking because none of them list a price or an online reservations. They all say give us your name and number for a quote and I don't really want to do that. Thanks!

  • @jenna8489 - yes, I'll shoot them a text. :)

  • Argentina? I think my co-worker's daughter and her H did that last year.

Yea I've been looking all day (slow day at work) and it seems Chile and Argentina are the best. The ones in Argentina look a little more remote and hard to get to though. At least one of the major ones in Chile is only an hour from the airport. Not going to lie, I'm a little blown away that they cost so much. When I went to Peru everything was dirt cheap but apparently ski resorts down there cost more than Aspen and exclusive places here.

  • Dallas is building a fake mountain/snow ski resort... Okay it's a little west of Dallas.

I have no input except to say that.

  • Yeah, I'd say you need to go to South America. I'm in the Rockies too in Canada, and there's nothing. I've also been up north in the summer (almost arctic circle), and there's no skiing there either. I did have a friend who went to Chile 1 summer for skiing and loved it. Average temp in Santiago is about 10C but the mountains would be cooler - about 0-15C. Obviously, the further south you go, the colder it gets.

  • I'm from OR, no locals that know skis in the summer and I know a ton of people with season passes to Hood.  The only thing I have to add.

  • @sugarirl1019 That is pretty sweet! I'm sure it'll only be open in winter, I can't imagine them trying to manufacture snow in the Texas summers, but that will be really cool!
