NWR - How to write my Christmas letter

Yes, I write one of those computer printed Christmas letters and send them with my Christmas cards.  I always try to put a personal note at the end.
I usually start with "Merry Christmas:, but that just seems wrong this year, since I am informing many distant relatives of my cancer.
I want to write "Dear friends and family,".  Do I capitalize "friends" and "family", or leave them lowercase?

Lower case. They're not proper nouns because they're not established, official groups.

ETA and I'm sorry you have to write such an uncomfortable letter. I hope you have candy bar pie.

Agreed. Are you sure that news is something you want to send in a Christmas card? Not trying to be difficult, just wondering.

This is the only communication that I have with some of my far flung cousins, just once a year.  Yes, I am telling them that my breast cancer has metastasized into my left eye, and that we are treating it.  I am not telling them that it is terminal.  (Some will figure that out on their own.)  I am also talking about my kids back in Maryland, and my grandson, our trip to Hawaii, and some other upbeat topics.  Limit - ONE PAGE!  Ann Landers said so!

LOL!  No, I won't.  My Christmas cards are usually religious in nature, but I did get a few Star Wars cards (Santa-Yoda) to send to the young folks on my list.  Oooh, maybe I'll have eyelashes by Christmas!
