Woop woop! Decided on a HM!

edited December 2014 in Chit Chat
FI and I have gone back and forth for MONTHS trying to figure out what to do for our honeymoon. We're taking it June 27-July 4th because FI gets that week off from work with pay. We've decided to fly to D.C. on the 27th, hang out there for a few days and then take a train to NYC on July 1st and hang out there until we fly back home on the 4th. I'm pretty excited!! We've got a few must-do's planned, but I'm looking forward to some sight seeing as well! Just wanted to share :D

Yeah I'd actually never ridden one until a few summers ago when I did a study abroad program in Europe, and haven't done it since, so FI and I are pretty excited about that part too lol

  • That sounds awesome!!  Have fun

  • Sounds like a blast! My family went to DC over the 4th one year and we loved it. :)

  • Are you taking the Crescent line? We're looking at that one going the other direction to New Orleans for next fall. We've also never taken a train, so I'd love to get an update after you get back!

I'm not sure! FI looked up the details last night so we could figure costs, but I'm not sure what line he looked at. I'll let you know what we figure out! :)

  • That's great!
  • That'll be fun!!  If you want any recommendations for DC, just let me know :).  I grew up here and have been living here again for over 3 years, so I can totally give you recs if you want them!
  • Also as a heads up I think trains are fun but may be unreliable. Last train I rode to and back from NYC was late by three hours. My experience may have been a fluke but I just had to put it out there! My mom works in DC so I can recommend places as well!

I've done the DC-NYC train at least 20 times, and never had an issue.  Admittedly, I haven't done it in about 10 years (I'm poor and take the bus when I go with FI), but I didn't ever have an issue when we did it for family vacations
  • This may seem like a dumb question, but humor me as in small town Alabama, we don't have this issue haha. What do we do with our luggage/other belongings on the train? When I took trains in Europe we were just taking day trips and never had more than a book bag or purse. I don't want to have to lug all our stuff on the train with us and have it be in the way.

  • Nope....you lug it on the train with you. Most of them have overhead storage similar to planes but they are pretty much the same size for carry on sizes. Sometimes you luck out and get a section for 4 in the back with 2 rows facing each other and you can grab that and put yours on the seats that are facing you. But if the train is full that is not going to be acceptable. I highly suggest for any trip taking trains (not just your trip) that you pack light and each have just a carry on size rolling luggage and maybe one backpack. It's just too much trying to drag around one or 2 of the check size bags. It's not that hard to pack light- I promise- I took only a carry on for two weeks in Asia.

  • Yep, not checked luggage on Amtrak. You have to hoist it up above your head.

I haven't had many delay issues with Amtrak. The Keystone line is 10-15 minutes late sometimes but I have never had any issues with DC-NYC or Philly-NYC.

I highly recommend sprinting for the Quiet Car. It's usually the first car on the train-ask a conductor when you get to the platform. Sometimes there are douchebags who don't observe the Sacred Rules of the Quiet Car. But usually it's bliss. The rest of the cars are sheer madness in comparison.

  • how exciting! FI decided on the honeymoon and booked the plane and hotel last weekend, and we decided on Vegas from June 14-22. The HM was/is a surprise so IDK what we are doing but I am excited
