So this is kind of a funny story.
My FSIL makes and repairs jewelry for a major chain jewelry store. My engagement ring is a ring that has been passed down through her & fiance's family (I'm the third generation), so it has a lot of sentimental value attached. (Not that brand new engagements rings DON'T have a ton of sentimental value, but I would absolutely vomit if I was the one who broke or lost this ring after two women have worn it successfully for decades!). On Thanksgiving, another woman at the family gathering was telling me not to worry, that engagement rings are virtually indestructible, and not to worry so much about things like taking it off for cleaning, washing dishes, etc. FSIL was at this gathering & overheard this comment & later told me privately "That's not exactly true. Trust your instinct regarding when to remove it."
Today, the woman who gave me the "Don't worry!" advice posted on Facebook that her stone had fallen out. Granted, it's 13 years old. And fortunately, it fell out at home and she noticed it happen, so she has her stone and all is well. I had the thought "Wow! How ironic." And then, while clicking my ring finger nail and thumbnail together, heard my own stone jangling!!!!!!!!! I thought for sure I was imagining it, so I took it off, and sure enough, there's a lot of wiggle in the stone. I put it in a padded envelope & sealed it up. FSIL wanted to do a ring checkup soonish anyway, make sure the tines were still sufficient, maybe add some metal to the inside of the band where it wears out the most, etc. So this is actually good timing. But I feel totally naked without my ring on!
