I finished Star Trek last night

You may be asking yourself, "Which one?" The answer is...

Last December I started watching Next Generation, and when I finished I decided to keep the party going. From there it didn't take long to decide that by the end of 2014, I wanted to have watched all of Trek, the good and the bad. I watched all the TV episodes, all the movies, even the animated series. EVERYTHING.

It's been a crazy ride. Hard to believe it's over. I can't say it's a particularly noteworthy accomplishment, since all I did was sit on my couch. But I've watched hardly anything else this year, and I really didn't regret it. I've never been hugely into sci-fi, but I love Star Trek and its optimism. I don't know that I learned a whole lot, but I did enjoy myself a heck of a lot.

Final thoughts are pretty simple: My favorite series was Deep Space 9, but the series I'd actually want to live in is Next Generation. I adore Major Kira. I disliked most of Voyager's characters except Janeway, the Doctor, and Seven of Nine. Original series and Enterprise were kind of meh to me. Undiscovered Country is vastly underrated.

Next up, I'll probably take a break from the genre and re-watch Gilmore Girls.

Any other fans out there? Anyone with mild but interesting accomplishments?

  • That is really fun! My FI went through most of the tv series on Netflix over the past couple of years. The only one we watched together was DS9, which I really liked. Voyager holds a special place in my heart because it was the Star Trek of teen years when my dad and I watched together. We would use the VCR to record it every week and then watch it together.

I keep meaning to go back and watch Next Gen on my own because I only saw scattered episodes when my FI was watching and I would really like to know the whole scope.

  • I'm not a huge Star Trek fan but Battlestar Galactica is my jam!  LOVE that show haha.

That'll probably be in the near future for me. But I need a little sci-fi break right now.

  • Next Gen is the nostalgic one for me - watching it as a kid with my parents. It must have been syndicated because its run ended when I was 5, but watched a good portion of it nevertheless and then last year ran through the whole thing on Netflix, because nostalgia!

I remember seeing a little of DS9 on TV as a kid, but since it was so scattered I couldn't get connected to any of the characters (except the crossovers from TNG).

Fun fact: Next Gen and DS9 were both first-run syndicated, so each market decided what channel they would be on and what day/time. So in some markets they played on no channels, and in others they played on multiple channels.

It's SO good.  I got my FI into it and he got me into Firefly.  We are sci-fi nerds.

My non-sci fi guilty pleasure will always be The OC and Gossip Girl.

  • HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGE Trek fan here. I bought a Star Trek cross-stitch book earlier this year, and I can't wait to get the rest of these projects off my plate so I can start on the "Shut Up Weseley" design. BBC America plays lots and lots of TNG reruns pretty much all weekend and I think Tuesday and Friday nights, though they keep changing the days on me.

  • Awesome! I have always wanted to do this and have watched big chunks of Next Gen and Voyager. I know I've seen pretty much all the episodes of both of those, but not in order. Now, I feel like I need to start them over since it's been a couple years since I sat down and binged them. I love it!
  • I was, in fact, wondering which one.

I haven't seen much Star Trek, but what I've seen, I've loved (I've seen almost all the movies, so there is that... and the tribble episode from . FIREFLY IS THE BEST. FI and I are going to eventually watch it when we have nothing going on. And also when I can convince him to sit still and watch days and days of TV with me, we're going to watch Sherlock. Which is not sci fu but is the bestestest ever.

H just finished the entire Trek universe too. We'd both seen most of the original series and TNG already, but it had been a long time.

I watched the original series and TNG with him, along with the movies, but I bowed out for DS9, Voyager, etc. I started school and simply didn't have time (or the interest). I like sci-fi, but I can only handle so much at once.
  • My husband did this! He watched everything from start to finish, in the order of air date. I watched a lot of it kind of incidentally. Like, I was there and it was on.

DS9 was definitely the best of the shows for me, but I still liked TNG a lot. I barely watched any Enterprise because what little I did watch was super irritating. I watched a lot of Voyager for some reason, but I really did not like it. It felt like it should have been a miniseries, not a 7-season show.

I missed most of the movies and most of the animated series, but I did catch a lot of TOS. It started off much differently than I expected--a lot less campy! But as Shatner sort of started ... Shatnering more and more, I was like, ohhhhh okay that's where all the jokes come from.

  • Ha!  I watched ALL the original and subsequent Star Trek series when they were first run.  DS9 is my favorite.  I have an original Hallmark Enterprise ornament on my tree (No bloody A, B, C, or D!)
Favorite Trek actor is Armin Shimerman (Quark).  I love his sense of timing!
I never liked Captain Kirk.  He was a sleeze.  Captain Picard is too full of himself.  James Avery - Oh, yeah!
