I Can't Seem to Win; But at Least This One Has a Good Ending

Ladies, I apologize for the rants and vents and bad news coming from my way, but I truly feel like someone put a hex on my family and I.  I know it sounds crazy, but anyway, here we go.

So this morning we had our Holiday concert practice in Church (I teach for a Catholic School).  I put my students in their seats and put down my stuff.  Without even thinking, I went to ask the 8th grade teacher if she had the order that the classes were going to be performing in.  She didn't and as I turned to walk away, the music teacher handed me a paper and program with the order.  Great.  As I'm looking at it, walking back to my students, two of them run up to me and say someone took my phone and wallet from my purse.  I panicked, grabbed the 7th grade teacher, who is thankfully is a male, and we ran outside.

I saw someone in a brown jacket and I instinctively knew it was him.  He was crossing the street and when I said, "Teacher Friend, thats him,"  the guy started jogging.  Luckily the 7th grade teacher retrieved my wallet and phone and nothing was missing from my wallet.

I had seen the man in the Church but just thought he was a lingering parishioner because they have an 8am mass and we arrived at 8:40am.

I completely understand that I should never leave my purse unattended and I usually don't.  This was just a rare moment where I had a lapse in judgement and honestly wasn't thinking when I walked away.  But then again, I'm in a church, you wouldn't think that this would happen in a Church.

I swear, these past few weeks have been hellish.

Sorry again for all the nutsy, venting, and sad posts lately.

  • Ugh I'm so sorry.  Being robbed takes away such a sense of personal security, no matter how big or small.  Are charges going to be pressed?

  • Everything was in my wallet and the 7th grade teacher said he looked very thin and gaunt which tells me he was probably homeless.

  • I'm so sorry.  One time my Mom was teaching Sunday school and someone came into our church and stole her wallet from her purse.  We didn't notice until she got a call from the credit card company who noticed unusual purchases on her card (since consistently every Sunday there was no use on the cards from 8 am-1 pm).  Being robbed takes away security, and it feels especially violating in a place that is normally associated with being a safe haven, like your home, or church.

    *Hugs*

I'm glad you were able to get the wallet back.

What about him being male makes it better? Was he a brave male? Are you not a brave female? Guns/knives and whathaveyou hurt men just as bad as women.

Oh excuse me, my equality is showing. I'm sorry that happened, it's good you got your stuff back. Thank god there was a man there!

  • @larrygaga good point.  I will say this, I was pretty shook up and not in the right mind to go after mind.  At the time, the only other teachers there were myself, the 8th grade and the 7th grade.  He was actually closer to the door, but had it been another female teacher close to the door, I would have grabbed them.

So yea, it doesn't really matter that he was a male.  LOL.

  • At least it all worked out!

FWIW, purse stealing in church isn't uncommon.   A few years ago my MIL said that a church in a very wealthy town here in CT had an issue with women finding their purses stolen when they came back from Communion.   I always take mine with me now.

There is a difference between asking for help because he's a man and asking a man for help. I'm glad you get that! I'm not saying you need to rush after a dangerous person, just that a man also does not need to save the day instead because he is a man.

I wholeheartedly agree!  I feel like when I typed up my post, I was still reeling from what happened so it might have come off the wrong way.  I walked back into Church shaking.  I still feel off about it and its been about 8 hours since it happened.

The church in which I used to work in Maryland was a constant target for thieves.  They used to steal the copper gutters off the building. (3 times!)  We lost a full set of handbells.  Several ladies had their purses stolen.
The utility shed was broken into twice, and the lawnmowers taken.
Churches are not immune from crime.  :-(
