The jeweler had to take my engagement ring for awhile :(

My engagement ring belonged to my great-grandmother, and has no accompanying wedding ring.  So this week, FI and I went to a jeweler to ask about creating a ring to fit my engagement ring.  The jeweler noticed that one of the prongs on my engagement ring was partially missing, so it needed to be repaired (who knew those things might break every 90 years or so?!).  It's SO weird to not wear my ring!!  I don't even take my ring off to shower or when I sleep, so it's just bizarre to be without it.  At first I just let my finger go "naked," but I kept rubbing my finger all day, and it was fairly distracting, so I put on a little gold band I got for my bat mitzvah.

How often have you guys had "ring issues" that have caused you to surrender your ring for awhile?  I hate it.  I hope it only happens every 90 years or so.

Re: The jeweler had to take my engagement ring for awhile :(

  • Only when I initially got it and had to have it resized. I wore it with a ring snuggie on it for aaaaages before I finally took it back to have it sized. It was gone about 1.5 weeks and it was awful.

I've recently started sleeping without it, because I'd been hitting it on things, and that's been super weird. Every morning I wake up and it's not on my finger is a new little mini panic attack.
  • Ah, I know the naked feeling. It comes with random i-lost-my-ring-freak-outs.

My diamonds were my grandmother's and just giving them her ring to create the new setting was hard.

After that I had to get it resized and cleaned. They were busy so I went to run errands during that time frame and felt like I need a sign that said I'M ENGAGED, PEOPLE.

  • The only time so far was when I had to have mine re-plated and it was gone for about a week?  FI bought me a costume ring to wear though for those times so I didn't have a naked finger.

    This would be me!!!

My ring goes to the oldest girl in every generation, so my mom wore it before I did.  It's funny, when I got engaged, my mom told me I was never allowed to take the ring off.  Maybe 2 weeks later I called her to say "hey, you never told me the ring was engraved with my great-grandparents names and the date they got married!!"

Her response? "I never knew that.  You know why?  Becuase I never took the ring off!  Why did you take the ring off?!"

I do take it off when I work out because I've been told the weights against the ring can wear down the metal and mess it up, but that's it.  It goes off only when I'm working out with weights.  It just feels SO weird to not have it.  I can't imagine how weird it felt for my mom when I got engaged

  • Wahhhhhhhh! STOP TALKING ABOUT RINGS (I'm kidding, really lol)

NO!!!  Do you know around where (i.e., at home, at work)?  Did you do the laundry today?  My friend's sister's ring got lost in the washing machine, but was found (unharmed).

Good luck!  Sending positive thoughts your way

    Sort of, maybe.

I got up this morning, got dressed, picked out clothes for my son, and then went to wash my face. That's when I noticed that it was gone. I usually take it off and put it on a ring holder thing at that point, because I don't want to get soap and lotion goop on it. Well, it was already gone, and I do not remember taking it off.

I figured that it must be in my bed or something, but I looked as thoroughly as I could without being grossly late for work. I couldn't find it. I really feel like i'm going to throw up. My real worry is, what if it's not in my bed/room? What if I lost it way earlier and just didn't notice? AHHHHH!

OMG I'm so sorry.  Is there any chance your son could have hidden it?  My (same friend's) sister's son used to do that ALL the time when he was little.  I'm so sorry!  I'm sure it'll turn up, but I'm sorry you have to deal with all this stress
  • I gave mine up for a week after I got it, in order to have it re-sized and to have it appraised for insurance purposes.

I also gave it up for a day just before my e-shoot because I was working and my fiance wasn't, so he was the one who took it the jeweler to have it cleaned and inspected.  I then left it off for the next two days to make sure it was nice and shiny for the e-shoot.

A few weeks ago, I legit forgot to put it back on after washing my face in the morning, and not having it on that day made me super paranoid.

It seem like when I voluntarily leave it somewhere for a greater good, not having it on doesn't bother me as much; but the day I just plain forgot?  I was going a little crazy and felt kinda naked without it.

Super possible, but I honestly don't remember taking it off. So, I don't know how he would have gotten his hands on it.

Luckily, H is a stay at home dad, so even though I had to leave he can keep looking. I am sending him frantic texts with other places to look, and begging for status updates like every 5 minutes. Hahah, poor guy.

I am also pretty sure it will be found, but the anxiety is fucking killing me. I feel like a double dose of Xanax is in order today.
  • Occasionally I'll take my e-ring off to sleep because I like to sleep with my hand between my thighs (not like that! just to keep it warm I guess, haha) and I don't like getting stabbed in the chub. But luckily now I can keep my wedding band on, so I don't feel naked.

Otherwise I haven't had to be without them yet! I'm dreading that day coming, and I hope you all are reunited with your rings soon!

  • I was engaged for almost 6 weeks before I had a ring because we were having it reset.  I HATED it!

  • I had a itty bitty side stone rip out from my mittens. My ring was bought while on a mini vacation so o had to mail it. It took about 4 weeks!

I take my ring off a lot when I'm painting or makeup or dishes or anything like that

  • @dcbride86 - Oh, I take mine off to clean, do dishes, wash my face, shower, do makeup, whatever. I take it off all the time -- just not for very long periods of time. I think it's much better to take it off when you do stuff like that so you don't need to clean it as often.

@ashley8918 - I DEMAND AN UPDATE. HAVE YOU FOUND YOUR RING? I'M HELLA STRESSED FOR YOU.

NOOOOO! Still feel like vomiting. I am not home, but I have had H searching for it. Unfortunately, He is the worst finder of things ever, so no real peace of mind there. I need to get home, NOW!

Girl, I bet you find it as soon as you get home and actually look.

Yesterday, FI couldn't find his phone and asked if I'd seen it. I was laying in bed reading, and last I had seen it, it was on his side of the bed, which was covered in clothes by this point (we were FINALLY unpacking all our clothes). I told him that's where I'd seen it, but it was a while ago so he may have moved it since then. He came in and glanced at the bed (since this is apparently how he looks for things), didn't see it, and left again. Not five whole minutes later he's like "I still can't find it!!!"

I reached over, dug around for half a second, and there it was. Right the fuck where I told him it probably was. Had he moved one article of clothing, he'd have seen it.
  • The first present FI ever bought me is this heart diamond necklace. He had to move away for work and I couldn't go with him, and we were only about 2 months into the 1 year contract and I was having a rough time with it. So he wanted to get me something I could wear everyday to remind myself that he's always with me. I have worn it everyday for the last 2.5 years. About a year after I got it I was in a big rush in the morning and never put it on.

I was freaking out all day because I couldn't remember if I had just not put it on, or if at some point throughout the day it had caught on something and broke. I felt so naked without it. I remember calling FI at lunch time at work almost in tears over it. It was simply in my jewellry box at home. lol

My ring I take off everynight because I slashed FI in the face one night with it and now he refuses to let me wear it to bed. haha. Sometimes on the weekend I wont put it on until the afternoon after i've showered etc, so its fairly normal to me not to be wearing it. However if I had to go a day or two without it I would be uncomfortable and would probably wear something else on that finger

I was going to give up my ring about a month before my wedding to have it redipped. I decided not to do it. The yellow gold is starting to show through only on the bottom, so unless I turn my hand over no one sees it. (That and I didnt want to pay $80 to do it.)

  • I take mine off every night because I'm pretty sure I would scratch myself in the face with it.

Every so often I forget to put it on after I put the curly goop in my hair. Once or twice I've even left the house without it. It is THE WORST feeling.

I also take it off to put on lotion. One time at work I forgot it on my desk when I hurried away to a meeting. I couldn't concentrate the whole time. Too worried about my dang ring.

Yes this.. men  (or at least mine) are not good at finding. Yesterday he was looking for his Russian hat and long underwear. I told him exactly where the hat was but he looked and could not find it. I looked and it would have bitten him. Then the long underwear was on top of the dresser he searched.

I am sure you will find it once you get the chance to look.

  • OH MY FUCKING GOD. YOU GUYS. My four year old just mother fucking found it. Where, you may ask? Ahem, here. Right above my God damned sink. What the fuck?! (Don't mind my dirty mirror/bathroom)
Yay!!! and LOL! I am so glad you found it, that must have been the worst feeling.

This reminds me of a time when my sister was looking forever for an expensive retainer, and her 2 year old son found it in her sheets on her bed.

I think kids are good at finding small objects.

They really are! H and I looked in that exact spot at least 20 times. My daughter just strolled in and was all, "hey, werent you looking for your ring? It's RIGHT there"... in like 10 seconds.
