Downton Abbey Season 5 **spoilers alert**

I must admit I am quite a sucker for the beautiful landscapes, sets and costumes of the series. The fact that it fills up my soap opera quota doesn't hurt either. :D
So, is anyone else watching season 5? What are your thoughts on the new season? of Mary's admirers? of Edith's baby? of Miss Bunting?
Where do you think the Crawleys' and their staff will end up this year?

Re: Downton Abbey Season 5 **spoilers alert**

  • I just watched episode one last night.

So my first thought is, FUCKING THOMAS, I hate him. And Edith's baby...someone's going to find out. Her aunt warned her.

  • Yeah, that business with the Drewes' is not going to end happily. I feel bad for Edith though, throughout 5 seasons, she is the one character (maybe besides both the Bates') that consistently just has nothing good happen to her. We still don't know what happened to Gregson - but the foreshadowing is not too good on that front either.

Thomas too, I mean after all that has happened to him (re. the Jimmy situation), I don't understand how he still is so calculating against all of the people that he works with. But, well, it's Downton Abbey and recycled storylines are the name of the game :)

  • Am I the only one expecting Baxter's secret to be a lot more, I don't know, crazy then it was?  I was kind of disappointed.  But then again, I am sure there is more to it...hopefully.

I have a love/hate feeling for Thomas.  Most times I love to hate him but then there are moments where I feel bad for him.

And the secret of Edith's baby will come out.  How it comes out though will be interesting to see.

And I am kind of tired of the whole "did he, didn't he" Mr. Bates story line.  I think they need to let the "is he a murderer" story line just die (no pun intended).

  • I've watched the whole season already, so I don't want to spoil anything. But it's a really entertaining season. The Christmas Special, which will air last is particularly amazing.

I was disappointed with the Baxter secret too. Dear lord I thought she poisoned her last employer or something.

And the murder plot line goes on for waaaaay too long.

  • I actually felt for Thomas when Jimmy left. He was the one character that had a positive relationship with Thomas.

I was really pulling for Charles Blake and Mary to hit it off so I'm pissed at her for going off with Gillingham. It pleased me to see Blake messing with her head.

I'm with @Maggie0829 on the Bates story line. Just leave him and Anna alone. Let them be happy damnit.

I agree wholeheartedly about the murder plot. It has been going on since basically Season 2. It's like the Bates' entire story is steeped in murder plots (remember his mother's friend / neighbor Vera - correct me if I got the name wrong).

ETA. AH, i just remembered Vera was Bates' wife!!! Woops!

  • In case anyone is a fan of comical recaps. This one -> CLICKY <- makes me laugh-cry. Not advisable to read at work. I tried it once and I couldn't control myself - too much funny.

  • I've seen the entire season already. I streamed it online when it was airing in the UK. I have no patience and didn't want to wait!

It gets GOOD. The murder storyline gets really old but other stuff happens and it is awesome.

Poor Edith. I feel for her.

  • I think I do better with Downton by binging, otherwise I keep forgetting who is who and what happened to whom.

The Ms Bunting / Tom (I think that's his name??) storyline bothers me, I'm not sure why but it does.  It will be interesting to see how that plays out.

I'm glad Mary went away with Gillingham, mostly just because it adds some fun to the season with her sneaking off to get it on!

  • I can't stand Ms. Bunting, except for the fact that she helps Daisy learn math.

I feel bad for Edith. Poor girl can't catch a break.

I feel like the season is a tad boring. I hope it gets better.

  • I binged Season 4 the week before Season 5 started, so I am very impatient between episodes so far. I had high hopes for Edith and then bad things just keep happening. I can't wait to see what happens.

We have already had the whole season 5 here in Britain... I'm sorry to say it doesn't get better. I love Downton but it is just so so bad this season. Julian Fellowes really has jumped the shark. I was so fed up and bored with it that I didn't even watch the Christmas episode.

It has turned into such a ridiculous soap opera. I wouldn't even say this is a spoiler, because EVERY episode follows the same formula.

Here is EVERY season 5 episode script:

Lord Grantham: Oh no, we have a problem about adapting to life in the 20th Century! We are 100% going lose Downton"

    Lady Mary: **something bitchy**

Lady Edith: "but my baaaaaby! wahhhhhhhh"

    Dowager countess: **Something snarky**

Lady Rose: but NEW technology! I'm so effing progressive!

Lady Grantham: Oh nevermind! Carson and Tom found a solution! Everything is saved!

Yay! Hilarity and Frivolity ensues! Everyone feast and dance!
