Dogs are a superior form of life

On Sunday FI and I were driving home when we saw a dog running in the road. She looked like a big puppy. She was dirty and scrawny. She was in the road because she wanted to drink the soapy water coming off the fire truck at the local fire station, but she was afraid. We pulled over and the firemen helped us wrangle her and put a leash on her using some left over pizza and a bowl of water. (The firemen are so nice and we are going to get them a gift card as a thank you). 

The puppy went from terrified of humans to riding in my lap in the car in just a few minutes. We got her home, washed her, fed her watered her. No microchip and not on any lost pet sites. She got along well with our 12 year old terrier mix and was generally so sweet and appreciative. We had been considering getting a second dog soon and we felt like it was fate so we decided to keep her. She's been doing really well and gaining weight already. She is not housebroken but we've been working with her and she's having much fewer accidents and has already learned some basic commands.

Well, FI took her to the vet for shots and a check-up yesterday. She's about a year old (he thinks she looks younger but her teeth have some tartar, but that could also be from eating trash) and un-fixed and the vet said she would have been abandoned some time ago and needs to gain about 8 more pounds (she weighs 29 right now) to be at a good weight. She has a little knot on her head that the vet said is probably a BB gun pellet. ON HER HEAD. WTF!?

Even more amazingly, the terrier is supposed to have his teeth cleaned soon so the vet did an x-ray of his chest to make sure his heart was ok for the anesthetic. HE HAS SHOT GUN PELLETS BETWEEN HIS SHOULDERS. This explains why he is sometimes sensitive about being touched there. So sometime before FI adopted the terrier someone SHOT AT HIM.

What is truly amazing to me is that both these animals love people. Love love love people. Dogs are amazing for their forgiveness and trust. And there are a lot of fucking idiots out there who I'd like to shoot in the butt with a BB gun and see how they like it.

I don't understand how people can hurt defenseless animals.

I hate people, it takes a sick person to hurt an animal. I'm glad these two sweet dogs were lucky enough to be taken in by such loving people though!

The vet thought she was a hound-beagle mix. We haven't heard her bay or anything so I hope she didn't get that trait if that's really what she is. If you google pointer-beagle cross you come up with a lot of dogs that look like just like her. 

What kind of dog is your pup?

People are horrible to animals, and it seems like the sweetest dogs and the ones that are hurt the worst. Our Maury came to us underweight with lots of scars and phobias but is the sweetest, kindest, cuddliest beast around.

I hope whoever shot at your pooches shot themselves as well.

I do not understand animal abuse. How can someone look at an animal and think "Hamm, let's shoot this" instead of "omg let me love you!!" You know?

People are just broken inside.

A kinder person than I would feel more compassion for them, but ultimately almost every drop of my limited compassion swings toward the abused party.

I have 2 basset hounds and I love the sound of baying. Sometimes, I play YouTube videos of hounds howling just to get them going. The purebred is very melodic. The basset mix is a one note girl and it's a very low, ominous note.

Congrats to you and your new furbaby. She's a good looking pup. I'm glad you found each other.

That made me cry.  I can't handle animals getting hurt, even when it it's on TV (I cover my eyes and BF tells me when it's okay to look).

So glad you found her and saved her.

ETA: What kind of fucked up piece of shit could ever hurt that sweet, loving face?

Our dog is a border collie mix. The rescue said he was a border collie lab mix, but it seems they think everything is a lab.

Awwww, she's precious! Glad she's found a wonderful home with you.

Not gonna lie though - the BB and shotgun pellets don't make me sad. They make me absolutely ragey. People are sick sometimes.
