Where's that Venn diagram for artists?

Dear Prudence,
I applied to 12 art and design universities, a lengthy and emotionally fraught process which involves creating a portfolio of work highlighting one’s skills and creativity. I’ve been rejected by every single one. I’m trying to remain positive with the understanding that I applied to some super competitive programs but it’s hard not to feel like I just suck. The college I’ll likely end up attending is in a place with a much less glamorous reputation than New York City, and after all the long months of working on my portfolio I’m embarrassed to tell my family and friends where I’m going. I’m a slightly older student, as I’ve been at university in my home state for a few years but have changed direction in my career hopes. It seems impossible to feel like I’ll succeed after being told so many times I’m not worth the trouble of collecting a tuition check from. Help!

  • Maybe some marketing classes would do her some good at the college she's at!!!
  • i, too, would go to art school to attend marketing classes.

  • If she doesn't know how to "sell" a school on bringing her on as a student, maybe art isn't her future career path is what I was getting at...  OTOH, either she has the talent and the drive or she doesn't, art school or otherwise isn't going to get her a job, her drive will...
  • the purpose of art school isn't to get a job. it's to refine and hone your talents as an artist. art school can help clarify what your career desires are by where your talents lie, but it's not there to provide a career. trade school is.

  • Did she only apply to art schools in NYC?  I would think the competition there would be a bit fierce.  And also, she basically just dissed every city that is not New York but saying they are all not glamorous.

  • it was probably cooper union. that is as selective as the ivies.

but scad (in georgia) and risd (rhode island) are not in glamorous places, but they are top tier art schools.

IF DD ends up pursuing art, I really want her to go to SCAD.  I love Savannah.  May not be glamorous, but it's lovely.
  • well, if scad doesn't work out for her, there are other job opportunities in the area.

fort stewart is nearby, so there are a lot of strip clubs. she could pursue art AND marketing at the same time. i'm pretty sure asking "you want this?" and "you like that?" a million times a day could qualify you for an mba.
