Seating for Cocktail Reception

edited June 2015 in Nevada-Las Vegas
So my reception coordinator just suggested that we not have seating for every single guest at our cocktail reception. I've heard this before. As a guest, I would be more comfortable if I had a seat. Especially if I'm in heels all night. I would also love a spot to put my drink, plate, camera, purse, etc. We are having an abundance of food, just not a 3 course meal because of the timing of our reception. Any thoughts on seating for everyone vs cocktail tables w/ limited seating?

  • Like you, I'm more comfortable with a seat, especially with heels.  Plus when there isn't enough seating people tend to squat in one spot so they don't lose it.

How long is the reception?  For a 60-90 minute time frame that feels like a cocktail hour (not familiar with your plans, but could see this being the case if you were say headed to a DDB tour after) seating for about half should be OK as long as there are enough cocktail tables to set drinks/food/purses.  Any longer and I think you need seating for everyone.

    It's 2.5-3 hours!
  • I'm in this same boat.  Except that I tend to stand.  And I don't want people to just camp out in one spot in what limited seating is provided.  You'll also probably want to consider the ages of your guests, if that might be a factor; as I know I shouldn't expect my grandmothers to stand.

My boss just got married with a cocktail reception for ~140 guests. There was a small amount of seating (pretty much enough for small children and the older guests, maybe 40 seats). We stood (including for the ceremony). I wore heels. It was fine. We also left early, but that's because we had other plans and everything ran an hour plus late.
